摘要:
This paper examines the possibility of applying industrial principles of quality assurance within the sphere of engineering education. In view of the impending ‘one market Europe’ and the envisaged transnational mobility of professionals, it is important for educators to demonstrate their commitment to quality. It is suggested that to teach about quality within engineering courses is insufficient: it is time to prove the benefits of these concepts through personal commitment and action. The industrial Quality Assurance model, ISO9000 is considered in the context of education and is proposed as a suitable vehicle for the implementation of the requisite attitudinal and cultural changes embodied in Total Quality Management. The possible conflict between the industrial view of quality as fitness for purpose and the educational ethos of striving for excellence is discussed. It is concluded that there is an urgent need for engineering educators to practise what they preach and move towards a customer centred, market driven education system dedicated to continuous self-improvement.

摘要:
The perception of risk possessed by the public is diverse and subjective. Their acceptance of risk often is conditioned by their daily environment and a personal attitude to safety. The paper addresses the need for safety to be taught as a continuous process through primary and secondary phases of education, and, in the context of human risk within modern society. The creation of the European Community presents a challenge to educationalists to consider and respond to the needs of a community derived from people of different cultures.

The financial failure of an industrial collaborator released the author and colleagues from the normal constraints of commercial confidence. In addition a large residue of source material was acquired at minimal cost. As an example of the benefits, the paper describes in some detail a case study in design for manufacture.

摘要:
A brief account of continuous training of staff in a sample of sixteen French firms. Comment is included on method, sample and limitations of the study. Findings relating to training include expenditure, degree of forward planning, objectives, workforce attitudes, management awareness, relative strength of firms and dependence on outside consultancies. Mention is made of the importance of the ‘formation continue system’ with its compulsory training levy and its possible relevance to a UK context where training weaknesses have led to skill shortages in key industrial sectors.

Die Auslandsaktivitäten der Fachhochschulen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland auf studentischer Ebene kann man in die vier Kategorien: Praxisse-mester, Sprachintensivkurse, Studien- und Prüfungsleistungen sowie Studienabschlüsse gliedern, denen sich mehrere Merkmale zuordnen lassen, die für die Förderungswürdig-keit der Programme bedeutsam sind. Aus der Fülle unterschiedlicher Austauschprogram-marten erfolgt das Vorstellen des Reutlinger sowie des Osnabrucker Modells mit dem gemeinsamen Merkmal ‘Doppelqualifikation von zwei national anerkannten Hochschul-graden’.

摘要:
The general education process is discussed with emphasis on electrical engineering at the level of higher professional education institutes and at university level. By law, a shorter curriculum was introduced at universities in 1982. In this paper attention is given to the project stimulating micro-electronic design. The various possibilities in the post-graduate studies are also mentioned. Some differences from other European educational systems are touched upon.

摘要:
Automated Measurement Techniques are easy to teach to students. Systems based on the standard IEEE-488 instrumentation bus offer a good method for the implementation of practical automated measurement systems in educational labs. In this paper we propose two such systems, which clearly illustrate the power of personal computers in data acquisition and control tasks.

摘要:
The particular solution yp(t) of a linear non-homogeneous differential equation with constant coefficients can be expressed in term of a convolution integral, namely, yp(t)=g(t)*T(t), where t(t) is the nonhomogeneous (forcing) term and g(t) is the Green's function for the associated differential operator. g(t) is also the Laplace inverse of the transfer function T(s) = l/P(s), P(s) being the characteristic polynomial of the differential operator. Owing to its versatile application, mathematical sophistication and elegance, and its simplicity, it is suggested, that the Green's function method be introduced while teaching Laplace transform, in a manner described in this article. Some simple results on convolution integrals involving discontinuous functions have been shown to be useful for computing the particular solution when the forcing function r(t) is discontinuous. An attempt has been made to justify the proposed method through a number of simple examples.

摘要:
The King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) requires that all the incoming high school graduates undergo a 1-year orientation programme prior to their enrolment in the various university degree programmes. Towards the end of this orientation year, all students must select a major of their choice. This selection process is influenced by several interactive factors among which are personal preferences, market influence on the supply and demand of young graduates, etc. It has been noted, for the past few years, that significant changes were taking place in the pattern of the majors selection process. It is the objective of this study to recognise the current pattern of the students' majors selection process, along with the relevant factors affecting this process. The study is based on a carefully formulated questionnaire that has been widely distributed among the orientation students. The generated data from this questionnaire forms the basis for the conclusions and recommendation of this study.
