In the original paper for the Schofield Scholarship, I discussed the people in, the training for, and the practice of the professions of pr9duction engineering and management, based on my experience and reading. The information was biased towards the U.K. and U.S.A. because of the larger amount of writing on those two countries. The Schofield Scholarship gave me the opportunity to follow the same line of research in two countries (Switzerland and Germany) whose experiences and traditions are not so generally known in the United Kingdom—certainly not to me before my visit.This Paper deals briefly with my original Paper and the conclusions I reached and then with the background and detail of the professions of production engineering and management in Switzerland and Germany, together with any conclusions which may be drawn from that.
