This article presents data to enable a better understanding of the safety and comparative effectiveness of the various contraceptive regimens currently in wide usage. Comparisons are made with traditional birth control and mortality associated with legal abortions during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, with risk of death from pregnancy and childbirth when no fertility control method is used, and estimates are provided of pill-related mortality among smokers and non-smokers.

This paper reviews the risks associated with taking postmenopausal estrogen in particular and some of the consequences to women of estrogens present in birth conrrol pills. Particular attention is focused on the marketing or Premarin-type drugs.

Recent research has documented the existence of discriminatory attitudes and behavior which may be detrimental to the professional development of the female dental student. This study examines the relationship of dental school characteristics and reported discrimination. Results are based on questionnaires sent to all women dental students in the US. enrolled in 1974. Using the school as the unit of analysis, step-wise multiple regression analyses were performed. Results indicated that discrimination was widely reported and a source of concern. Although the variables did predict, to a significant degree, the variation in the proportion of women reporting discriminatory events, it was also apparent that other factors not considered in this study also played a role.
