AbstractThirty elderly nursing home residents and ten community residing older adults were observed in group settings. Their behavior was assessed for dependent personal maintenance, independent personal maintenance, and appropriate and inappropriate behaviors. Responses by staff and peers to these behaviors were classified as positive, negative, or ignore. The frequency of occurrence of these behaviors as well as the relationship of resident to peer or staff behaviors were analyzed. Results indicate that community‐residing elders' behaviors differ from nursing home residents' in quantity rather than quality of interactions. There was a lower frequency of behaviors in the nursing home residents. Though older adults respond differentially to various behaviors of other nursing home residents, staff responses were consistent regardless of residents' behavior. AbstractThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a comprehensive residential direct‐care staff training program on staff knowledge, record keeping, habilitation delivery, and turnover. A 40‐hour training course was presented to 18 direct‐care staff employed in three community residential facilities (CRF), while 18 staff in three other CRFs were placed on a waiting list. Sixteen of 18 trained staff (89%) increased use of habilitation activities, averaging 35.44% programming after training. Only six (33%) of the staff on the waiting list increased programming. The effectiveness of training was assessed against the gains of developmentally disabled (DD) consumers. In the training group, 31 of 36 (86.11%) residents increased on‐task behavior while only 7 of 22 (31.6%) of the waiting list residents increased on‐task behavior. Training also yielded improved client program records and a 50% decrease in staff turnover. Follow‐up over 12 months showed behavior maintenance. AbstractA unit wide behavioral programming system for high functioning mentally retarded clients who displayed maladaptive behavioral excesses was developed and implemented on a coeducational institutional living unit for 7 months. Significant clinical reductions were achieved in client injuries, broken windows, emergency restraint usage, the percent of clients receiving psychotropic medications and medication dosages. These reductions continued during the program's maintenance phase. A number of factors are discussed that appear to have contributed to the program's success.

AbstractThis study was a retrospective evaluation of in place treatment procedures. Clinical data were reviewed from 45 cases in which contingent restraint was employed in an effort to modify the inappropriate behaviors of institutionalized mentally retarded persons. Statistically significant decrements in the rates of inappropriate behavior were detected over the 18 months of study. Clinically meaningful improvement in the rates of behavior were detected in 53% of the cases in which the target behavior was either aggression, selfinjury, or property destruction. The inclusion of less serious behaviors in the study did not substantially increase this rate. Effectiveness appeared to be more pronounced for males, younger persons, persons with short institutional tenures, and persons who were free from psychotropic medication during the course of treatment.

AbstractWhile numerous residential programs for mentally retarded adolescent offenders have been established throughout this country, no empirically‐based population characteristics have been compiled which are sufficient to guide their systematic design. This study assessed 65 such young offenders along various treatment‐relevant dimensions, and used the resultant data to portray an average, hypothetical youth. Based on that profile, a compatible habilitation model was derived. It was concluded that a basic point economy, augmented by timeout procedures and supported by a secure (locked) setting, seems to be a viable approach for initiating treatment with these youth. Thereafter, programming should continue in a nonsecure group home, and finally, on an outpatient basis, in the generic community service sys
