SUMMARYFor many years middle managers’ work, career and future role have been the subject of gloomy descriptions, assertions and predictions. These are described and compared with studies, including our own, that give a more optimistic picture of what is happening to middle management. We also cite survey information about numbers, salaries and job mobility of UK managers, including middle managers. We argue that before generalizations, either optimistic or pessimistic, can justifiably be made, attention needs to be paid to the complexity of changes affecting middle managers’ jobs, to the diversity of organizations in which middle management work and the complexity of individual reactions to these chan

摘要:
SUMMARYThe concurrent growth of interest in management competencies and management development and in business ethics, exposes a need to bring these two fields together. The moral dimension to organizational behaviour should be considered when management education and development programmes are being designed. Those concerned with ethics in business and management should look beyond approaches based on codes of conduct and traditional educational methods. In this paper the idea of management competence is conceptualized broadly, with insight drawn from sources in education and social psychology. It is argued that ideas derived from Kohlberg's work on moral development can provide the basis for management development programmes in which theoretical understanding of ethical theory and moral issues is augmented by commitment to personal principles, a well integrated sense of personal identity, and relevant interpersonal skills, acquired through experiential learning.

SUMMARYThe reluctance of top managers to use computers themselves has become almost legendary, although there are good reasons for their apparent preference for traditional information sources and access routes. Isolated cases have shown how computer‐based executive support systems can be used by top managers when great care is taken by the system developers over data presentation and the user interface. Now, the advent of high quality commercial software means that Executive Information Systems (EIS) may become far more widespread. SUMMARYThis paper examines Leavitt's three‐part model of path‐finding, problem solving and decision making, and implementation in order to explore how far this model encapsulates the senior manager role. The discussion suggests that all three dimensions are important. The author argues that the top manager of the future in an increasingly complex economic world must primarily have good all round vision of the world in which he or she operates and the ability to communicate and implement his plans via subordinates. SUMMARYThis study questions traditional assumptions in the person‐environment fit models. Previous research has regarded any kind of fit as positive and any kind of misfit as negative. In the present study, this thinking is refined. It is proposed that consideration of the nature of the fit or misfit matters and that different dependent variables, including performance, may be affected differently. The proposal is tested with a sample of 212 research scientists. The findings demonstrate modest support for the differing effects of type of fit on the dependent variable
