摘要:
SUMMARYWorker honeybees were kept in cages at different temperatures and provided with water and sugar syrup of different concentrations. Their food consumption, and the amount and concentration of the contents of their honey stomachs, were determined. The amount of sugar syrup consumed increased as the temperature decreased. More water was consumed in the cages with concentrated syrup. At 20·0°–27·5°C. the bees diluted food in their honey stomachs with saliva, the dilution being greatest with the more concentrated food. At 30°—37·5°the bees still diluted their food and showed an increased water consumption, but because they evaporated water on their mouthparts (especially at 37·5°C.), the honey-stomach contents were more concentrated.

摘要:
SUMMARYIn experiments in which the activities of 7 000 pollen-collecting honeybees were recorded when offered a choice of pollens, 20% collcted a mixture (2 years old) of pollens from several species of ground flora, whereas only 3% collectedEucalyptus goniocalyxpollen. There were considerable variations in preference; reasons for these and consequences of them are discussed.

摘要:
SUMMARYAttempts were made to produce a good-flavoured mead by more rapid fermentation than is usual. Several wine yeasts were tested, and additives of two types, I composed mainly of inorganic salts and citric acid, and II with a wide spectrum of vitamins and small amounts of organic and inorganic nitrogen compounds.Honeys varied in their fermentability, in general light honeys being more difficult to ferment than dark honeys. But addition of growth factors allowed all honeys tested to be fermented rapidly, yielding characteristic meads which had none of the unpleasant flavour associated with long (unaided) fermentation.A recommended procedure is described, which uses additives I + II and can give a dry or sweet mead (alcohol content 12% or 14–15%). Fermentation takes about 2 weeks without agitation. The production of mead champagne and mead sherry is also described.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe new subspecies described inhabits South Africa. The unpaired appendage of the male hypopygium is rounded posteriorly, and fringes the basis of the paired appendages in front. The incision between the female cerci is bordered by two straight margins subtending an obtuse angle. Other features are described; the life history is unknown.

摘要:
SUMMARYBy introducing a cooling system into an existing apparatus for collecting bee venom, it was possible to obtain large enough quantities of the liquid fraction to facilitate chemical analysis. Gas chromatograms showed at least 13 peaks, one of which is presumed to be iso-amyl acetate. The effect on bees of this substance, and of the liquid fraction now obtained, is described briefly.

摘要:
SUMMARYTwenty-eight honey samples were analysed for catalase activity by a spectrophotometric method. Results were compared with previous data on diastase and peroxide accumulation in the same samples. Statistical analysis indicated a direct relation between amounts of catalase and diastase, and an inverse relation between catalase and peroxide accumulation.

摘要:
SUMMARYHoney diastase was separated into two major components, the first containing mainlyα-amylase, the second a mixture ofα- andβ-amylases. These amylases probably differ from amylases of other sources.

摘要:
SUMMARYPartial separation and tentative identification of the organic phosphates present in the phosphate fraction of honey have been accomplished by using a silica gel column and several paper chromatographic procedures. The organic phosphates identified were glucose 6- phosphate, 2- or 3-phosphoglyceric acid andαorβ-glycerophosphate. Inorganic phosphate was also found. One organic phosphate was not identified.

摘要:
SUMMARYWhen colonies were given hives too small to hold all their adult bees, the bee density was between 2½and 3½times as great as in occupied parts of hives with more than sufficient space for the colonies in them. The density of bees on brood was higher in colonies from which part of the brood had been removed than in colonies given extra brood. The relation of these findings to swarming is discussed.
