摘要:
January 19661 THIN-LAYER CHROMATOGRAPHY 11 Thin-Layer Chromatography The following are summaries of papers presented at the meeting of the Thin-Layer Chromato- graphy Group held on September 29th 1965 and reported in the November issue of Pro- ceedings (p. 165). Thin-layer Chromatographic Study of the Reactions of Absorbed Molecules BY P. WILLIAMS (Textile Chemistry Laboratory The University Leeds 2) MR. WILLIAMS said that the oxidation of cholesterol adsorbed on silica gel with aqueous chromic acid lead to the formation of amongst other products sterol acetates. It had been shown that some of the cholesterol was first degraded to acetic acid and subsequently this solution was able to acetylate a proportion of the residual cholesterol. Quantitative experi- ments relating the extent of acetylation to the concentration of aqueous acetic acid had been described. With dilute solutions (less than 10 per cent.) esterification took place entirely on the surface of the adsorbent. It was also shown that other aliphatic alcohols and acids were readily but incompletely esterified by adsorption catalysis. Thin-layer Chromatography of Amino-acids BY P. F. LOFTS* (Textile Depavtnaent The University Leeds 2) MR. LOFTS described how highly effective solvent systems for resolving mixtures of amino- acids on films of cellulose had been discovered by a systematic study of the influence of solvent composition on the resolution. The observations had made possible a rational approach to the problem of formulating solvents for chromatographing ionic organic compounds It was shown that satisfactory solvents would contain either three or four components. A solvent containing fewer components was unlikely to be sufficiently discriminating and a solvent containing a greater number of components was unnecessarily complicated. It was also shown that the resolution was considerably influenced by the temperature and by the degree of saturation of the atmosphere in the developing tank but that it was almost independent of the film thickness. *Present address Johnson & Johnson Ltd. Gargrave Yorks.
