This article explores the changes that are likely to occur by the end of this century in the pattern of cancer as a disease, in its treatment and in the care for patients and their families in order to identify the kind of educational preparation that cancer nurses will require to meet their clients' needs. A recent European initiative, which has sought to achieve consensus on courses for nurses in cancer care across Europe, is seen to be an important step towards the development of a coordinated European approach to cancer‐nursing education. This article describes an evaluation of patient satisfaction with the care provided by a multidisciplinary cancer team based in a cancer unit which is a designated specialist cancer‐treatment centre. An opportunistic sample of patients attending cancer out‐patient clinics were approached, and 93 (84%) completed the questionnaire. Most patients were highly satisfied with the care and information provided by doctors, cancer nurses and other attached professionals. However, dissatisfaction was expressed with the amount of information given about treatment trials and research, and with waiting times in clinics and pharmacy. Nursing research is a challenging area in which European nurses still have to develop expertise. The needs of cancer nurses were identified in the literature and classified according to the following three categories:• Why is research needed?• What is needed to understandhitiatdperform research?• What are the different levels of research awareness and competence required in the cancer‐nursing field?Meeting the research needs of nurses in cancer care is a major concer. In terms of mangement, it implies setting up plans, programmes and projects, and implementing strategies. This suggests having the means available. Means are usually divided into three categories; manpower, material and money. Meeting the research needs of nurses in cancer care will be a challenge for the next few years. A new education package covering every aspect of the management of chemotherapy‐ and radiotherapy‐ induced emesis is currently being produced by the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care in collaboration with Glaxo. The term ‘alternative’ or ‘complementary’ diet refers to any modification to a normal diet that claims to cure or treat cancer. These diets may be advocated for use in conjuction with, or instead of, conventional anti‐cancer treatment. Although treated with scepticism by the dietetic and medical professions, they are popular with patients. Most of the dietary therapies share the same common philosphy and strict dietary principles. In general, these diets appears to be more harmful than beneficial, in nutritional terms at least, Some cancer patients do seem to drive some benefit from these therapies. This article proposes the theory that this benefit is psychological rather than nutritional, a placebo effect. The psychological theories of expectancy effects, cognitive dissonance, anxiety reduction and the therapist effect are explored in order to support this theory.
