摘要:
Contributions to monetary theory are reviewed, with emphasis on issues facing small open economies such as Australia. We consider the increased emphasis on information in commode it yes change, and the information content of different stabilization policies. ‘Ration’ expectations. Wealth effects, discretionary monetary policy and the alleged ‘death of Keynes’ are discussed in this context. The section on open economies discusses alternative models of exchange rate determination and monetary aspects of international transmission processes. The ‘problem’ of overshooting exchange rates is analyzed. The paper also reviews the debate on financial regulation and issues facing the Inquiry into the Australian Finan

摘要:
This review describes the IMPACT models. considers some of the studies which have used the models, and provides an assessment of the contribution of the project. There is not one model, but rather a set of flexible models for evaluating the effects of structural changes. Information is provided at the disaggregated industry and occupation level as well as at the macroeconomic level. While there are legitimate doubts about some of the underlying characteristics and assumptions of the models and about the to base and parameters, the project represents, an important contribution to economic science and as a provider of additional information for policy analysis.

摘要:
Two ways of gathering information about and mitigating the impact of a large‐scale mining project are briefly described and contrasted:one way involves postponing the construction and operation of the project while attempts are made to forecast, evaluate and prepare for its impact; the other way involves commencing immediately with a small‐scale, or attenuated, project with a smaller impact and by studying the effects of this project inferring the impact of a large‐scale project. The costs of the two alternative policies of postponement and attenuation are defied as reductions m the present value of the project in question. A model of open‐pit mining is perished which allows these costs to be calculated for any degree of postponement or attenuation. The model is applied to three uranium mines in the Northern Territory of Australia to estimate for each mine the costs of the two policies. The model is then used to estimate the costs of sequences of mine development in the Northern Territory involving various combinations of postponement and attenuation policies. The costs of these policies are then compared with the reduction in the impact of the industry using the population of a mining town site as a proxy for impact. This comparison is a first step towards a benefit/cost analysis of the two p

摘要:
Using data from the 1974–75 Household Expenditure Survey, estimates of marginal budget shares and pre‐committed expenditrues are Obtained for thirteen house hold types chosen on the basis of household composition and age of head. The survey data are reconciled with the national accounts estimates of expenditures, and the adjusted parameter estimates are used to predict national consumption expeditures over the period 1966–67 to 1975–76. The ‐predictions are improved by allowing for the demographic and other structural changes which occurred in the Australian economy over th

摘要:
Data from the quarterly ‘Survey of Industrial Trends in Australia’ have been used to evaluate whether various excess demad and expectations influences have significantly effected reported price changes in Australian manufacturing industry. For the manufacturing sector, as a whole. both expected and unexpected changes in average unit costs have been important, but no explicit excess demand influence has been additionally significant at the I per cent level. For a majority of the indrutry categories tested, however, certain excess dgmand variables (involving. for example, finished goods inventories, unfilled orders. and industry operating rates) and various cost and inventory expectations variables have been signific

摘要:
The Keynesian element of Kaldor's distribution theory was that ‘investment is determined independetly of current savings’. It is argued here that this propsition is true of neo‐classical economic analysis which takes any account of expectations. The Kaldorian mechanism. therefore, also operates in this class of models. This is illustrated by showing the effect in a neo‐classical model of an improvement in investment opportunities in redistributing income from low to high savers. It is argued inter alia (a) that there is no question of a need to reconcile neo‐classical and neo‐Keynesian income distribution theories(b) that the neo‐classical analysis put forward is essentiallyex postand therefore serves to isolate mechanism and makerelati
