AbstractIn specimens of the hermatypic coral speciesFungia scutariaandMontipora verrucosaand in the algaUlva lactuca, nitrate uptake was measured in light and dark with a flow‐through apparatus. The nitrate uptake was measurable in high‐nitrate bay water of Kaneohe Bay and also in low‐nitrate open ocean water. Nitrate consumption rates by the corals and the alga did not differ from light to dark.Neither the coral nor the alga showed measurable immediate nitrate uptake in open ocean water of low nitrate concentration when they had been held previously in the high‐nitrate bay water. Abstract75% of the isolated strains were Gram negative, asporogenous bacteria. Almost a half of them fermented glucose, which was probably caused by a selectivity of the agar medium for the particular types. The groups tentatively classified as Enterobacteriaceae andAeromonas, prevailed during summer, whereas pseudomonads andAcinetobacterwere more common in winter.

Investigations on the CO2Balance of Submerged Water Plants in Running Water By Means of a Motile Laboratory for Infrared Gas AnalysisThe CO2‐balance of the submerged water mossesHygrohypnum ochraceumf.obtusifolia, Amblystegium riparium, Amblystegium ripariumf.fontinaloidesand ofPotamogeton trichoides(Potamogetonaceae) was investigated by means of a transportable laboratory for infrared gas analysis. The experiments were carried out in the river Zwickauer Mulde by means of glass vessels exposed to the water body. The device for continuous measuring CO2exchange was operated by pumping air through the vessels containing 4 l of water. The water plants exhibited a distinct day night rhythm of CO2turnover. In some cases river water alone, which had percolated a tampon of Perlon fibres, also showed a considerable day night rhythm of CO2turnover which had to be attributed to phytoplankton and suspended periphyton organisms, the activity of which is superimposed above the photosynthetic activity of the macrophytes. AbstractThe aerobic decomposition of freshwater phytoplankton was monitored over a 10 day period to determine rates of production and microbial utilization of total dissolved organic carbon and dissolved carbohydrates. Following molecular weight fractionation of the total dissolved organic and carbohydrate carbon produced, it was found that each component contained a highly labile as well as a partially refractory fraction. Specific decomposition rate constants were determined for both fractions. Molecular weight retention characteristics of the ultrafilter used were also evaluated.

AbstractSpecimens of the lumbriculid genusStyloscolexMICHAELSEN have been found in northern Alaska. They were identified asSt. opisthothecusSOKOLSKAJA 1969, known from Kamchatka. A description of the Alaskan specimens and habitats is given. The genusStyloscolexonce supposed to be a Baikalian endemic has representatives also in Manchukuo and Japan. It is pointed to the fact that bottom‐living organisms of lakes of vast areas are rather unknown. Only Lake Baikal, famous for its size and depth, has attracted special interest and been thoroughly investigated. The genusStyloscolexmay thus be found in more areas. AbstractInvestigations have been carried regarding carotenoids and vitamin A in the crabsPachygrapsus marmoratus(FABRE) andEriphia spinifrons(HERBST) from the Black and Adriatic Sea.
