Two groups of complete denture wearers were used. They were informed about normal facial proportions and were then asked to classify themselves into one of four face height classes. One group had to choose between four schematic drawings and the other between four color photos of a complete denture wearer, taken at different vertical dimensions. The patients' self‐assessment was correlated to a professional assessment and measurements of the patients' face. The patients' assessments were significantly correlated to the professional assessment in both groups. Self assessment of facial proportions by complete denture wearers could be an easy and useful method of activating them to consult a dentist for check‐up. Aging of the global world population both in developed and developing countries, an unbalanced male‐female ratio within this elderly population, increasing populations – including elderly – within urban areas, all will have a marked effect on the practice of dentistry. Furthermore, major epidemiological changes occurring in the dental field, including an increasing dentition life expectancy, increasing root caries prevalence, decreasing coronal caries rates in children, and the relative increase in the prevalence of periodontal problems will have further impact on the dental care system. Increased longevity and the perceived increasing trend of prescribed drug usage in elderly patients mandate that dentists treating gerodontic individuals be acutely aware of the unique problems these factors present. This study was designed to elucidate the prevalence of prescription medication usage among geriatric dental patients including awareness of drugs used and the reasons for use as well as compliance in the consumption of the drug(s). Data was collected on a total of 163 elderly patients seen at the Baylor College of Dentistry, Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology.

The aims of the present study were to register the effect of toothbrushing with chlorhexidine gel for 51 weeks and compare the effect of two hygiene regimens, one with continuous use of chlorhexidine gel for toothbrushing twice a day and the other in which ordinary toothpaste was substituted for chlorhexidine 1 week every third week. The total number of participating patients was 152 institutionalized elderly, mean age 76.2 years, Gingival Index according to Löe‐Silness and Plaque Index according to Bay‐Ainamo were registered 12 times during the study. The long‐term effect of Toothbrushing with chlorhexidine gel was equal for the two hygiene regimens. The incidence of side effects was surprising small.
