摘要:
Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between unions and the economic performance of firms in the Japanese manufacturing sector. Although the effects of trade unions on the enterprise has been the subject of substantial research over the past decade, this research has focused almost exclusively on Western systems of industrial relations and union organization. In this study, Japanese enterprise unions were found to be associated with significantly lower levels of profit, lower productivity and higher levels of capital intensity. These results challenge the commonly held views of a subservient and dependent union movement in Japan.

摘要:
Abstract: The contents of over 100 collective agreements, drawn from 50 bargaining units in both 1979 and 1990, are examined. Recognition clauses remain largely extant. Some extension and formalization of procedural provisions is recorded, particularly regarding time off work for shop‐stewards. Closed‐shop clauses are deleted from a number of mainly white‐collar agreements but remain extant in the majority of manual agreements. More flexible working practices are recorded in many agreements. The form of flexibility agreement varies markedly, with some agreements demonstrating greater formalization and others shifting towards more general managerial prerogative clauses. Possible explanations for this pattern are consi

摘要:
Abstract: This paper reviews decisions of TUC Disputes Committees from 1974 to 1991. It considers whether the rather different conclusions of studies of earlier periods are still valid and assesses the effectiveness of ‘Bridlington’ in resolving disputes over new issues, in particular ‘single‐union deals’. It concludes that there is still a role for a voluntary disputes resolution mechanism of this kind, although recent experience has shown that it has its [imitations. TUC‐affiliated unions will therefore lose a useful mechanism for promoting the efficient use of their resources if the 1993 change in the law leads to Bridlington bein

摘要:
Abstract: The article examines changes in industrial relations in the recently privatized water authorities, and argues that the development of new industrial relations procedures and practices has involved a substantial reconstruction of the old public‐sector industrial relations framework. However, change has by no means been uniform throughout the ten new water plcs, and comparisons are made to highlight the diversity of management response to the new environment created by privatization. In explaining the scope and pace of change, the paper argues that the early move to single‐employer bargaining and the opportunities for comparisons of performance within the new regulatory framework are important explanatory fact

摘要:
Abstract: This paper offers a preliminary investigation of union impact on investment in intangible capital. We first report evidence on the raw correlation between union membership density and R&D intensity. This suggests that higher union density is associated with increased innovative activity among an important subset of British industry. Attention then shifts to a consideration of whether the ‘stylized facts’ are indicative of a causal relation or are instead an artefact produced by the concentration of unions in those sectors evincing greater scope for R&D. We offer a simple cross‐country test in which German R&D outlays serve as the benchmark or comparator. No support is adduced for the notion that unions cause highe

摘要:
Abstract: This paper uses data from the International Social Science Programme Work Orientations Module to investigate whether there is empirical support for Soskice's (1990, 1991) hypothesis that there is a difference in labour market incentive structures between northern European ‘flexibly co‐ordinated’ systems and the ‘uncoordinated’ or ‘deregulated’ systems of the UK and the USA, which generates improved employee co‐operation and performance in the former. Labour markets in ‘uncoordinated’ systems are found to generate the better employee work performance. Little support is found for the existence of a ‘flexibly co‐ordinated’ type of labour market incentive structure. Instead, labour market incentive structures are

摘要:
Abstract: Developments in public‐sector industrial relations during 1993 have raised questions about unions, pay determination and conflict resolution. This review explores some of the tensions in these areas created by new restrictions on pay increases, changes in reward structures and further market‐testing across services. Where the different forms of pay determination buy industrial peace, the price may be too high in terms of the productivity and efficiency requirements gains now being demanded. But co‐operation is needed too, and the dilution of the Whitley system of collective bargaining may be more likely to produce the very co‐operation embodied in its philosophy, but not always present in its practice. The new ‘superunion’ UNISON will play a role here, as single‐table bargaining and even single‐union deals develop. These institutional developments will also be affected by pay flexibility measures which endeavour to improve individual performance at the front line of services, while in practice increasingly giving the reward
