SUMMARYThe young pillars ofCeratiomyxa fruticulosaare highly vacuolate and contain the usual cytoplasmic organelles including nuclei, mitochondria, microfibers and microtubules. Distinctive structures consisting of dilated rough endoplasmic reticulum containing electron dense globules are found distributed throughout the cytoplasm at this stage. The development of protospores and their ultrastructure are described as well as nuclear divisions, presumably representing meiosis. Mature spores which contain four nuclei, Golgi and centrioles are described. A layer of electron-dense material which is continuous with the stalk surrounds the mature spore. Its taxonomic significance is discussed.

SUMMARYSoils and other substrates from various Utah areas were screened for Gymnoascaceae and other keratinophilic fungi. Twenty species of Gymnoascaceae and more than ten species of keratinophilic fungi were isolated. Of the Gymnoascaceae, six species are described as new and includePseudoarachniotus trochleosporus, Arachniotus volatilis-patellus, A. verruculosus, Petalosporus afilamentosus, Gymnoascus dugwayensisandAuxarthron pseudauxarthron. Arachniotus albicanswas isolated for the first time in North America.

SUMMARYThe characteristics of a cell-free amino acid incorporating system prepared from the mycelium ofRhizopus arrhizusFischer are described. TheR. arrhizussystem is dependent on ribosomes, supernatant protein fraction, polyuridylic acid, soluble ribonucleic acid, adenosine triphosphate, an ATP generating system, and magnesium concentration. The activity was greatly stimulated by GTP, ammonium, and to a lesser extent by spermine. The incorporation was inhibited by cycloheximide and ribonuclease. Streptomycin had essentially no effect on the system. A temperature of 25 C,pH of 8.1 and an incubation time of 60 min were found to be most efficient for this system.

These two classical members of the genusMortierellaapparently have not been collected since they were originally found. The two species are redescribed and neotypes selected.

SUMMARYA morphological study ofMagnaporthe salviniigen. nov., comb, nov., the cause of stem rot of rice, disclosed that it had unitunicate, shortstalked, thin-walled, deliquescent asci with a light-refractive ring surrounding the pore. The ontogeny of the paraphyses-like bands found in the centrum was studied and the termreliquiaeproposed for this tissue. The genusMagnaporthewas established in the Diaporthales to accommodate this fungus.Magnaporthe salviniiwas found heterothallic.

SUMMARYThe cell wall of dry, dormant conidia ofAspergillus nidulansis three-layered. The wall of hydrated conidia is five-layered and the germ tube wall is continuous with the innermost layer. The outermost layer consists of rodlets measuring 10 nm in diameter. Mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum increase in number and amount, respectively, during hydration and germination and vacuoles increase in size. The apex of the young germ tube is multivesicular.
