SUMMARYAscospores ofPhillipsia domingensisandP. luteagerminated readily when plated on 2% Difco Noble agar. The two species differ in the manner of germination. The ascospores ofP. domingensisbecome one septate during germination, and produce one or two germ tubes, which frequently bear conidialike structures. The conidialike structures are holoblastic, and are borne on sympodially proliferating conidiogenous cells. The ascospores ofP. luteagerminate by a single germ tube which does not bear conidialike structures and they do not become septate. In both species the ascospore wall becomes double during germination, with the actual spore separating from an outer wall layer.Ascospore germination inP. domingensisis compared to germination inSarcoscypha coccinea.The generaPhillipsiaandSarcoscyphaare considered to be closely related.

SUMMARYAntheridal production was induced by the addition of 1,000 units/ml of hormone A to hyphae ofAchlya ambisexualis.Electron microscopy of nuclear divisions within hyphae demonstrated the presence of centrioles adjacent to somatic nuclei possessing intranuclear spindle fibers. The enlargement of antheridial nuclei, the presence of axial elements attached to the nuclear membrane prior to chromosome segregation, the reduced size of fertilization tube nuclei, and the double-membraned envelope around centrioles are considered indicators of antheridial meiosis.

SUMMARYThe regulation of catabolism in five strains ofNocardia erythropolishas been examined with respect to six different carbon sources. The carbon sources examined included asparagine (ASN), gluconate (GLC), glucose (GLU), glycerol (GLY), mannitol (MTL), and succinate (SUC). ASN, GLC, and SUC supported good growth of all five strains, whereas GLU supported good growth of strain 305 only and GLY or MTL of strains 474 and 520 when the inoculum had been cultivated on peptone-yeast extract agar. Capability to oxidize GLU and GLC in strain 305 and GLY in strain 520 was constitutive. However, in strain 305, ASN, GLY, MTL, and SUC utilization was inducible. Induction of catabolic systems for ASN and GLY with strain 305 grown in SUC and for MTL and SUC with ASN-grown cells occurred in 1 hr. Both ASN or SUC repressed utilization of MTL in strain 305 while GLU or GLC allowed for partial derepression of the MTL system. Inducibility of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, hexokinase and mannitol dehydrogenase was confirmed by enzymic assays.

SUMMARYThe aflatpxin-producing ability of cultures ofAspergillus flavusandA. parasiticusderived from room-temperature-dried conidia stored in closed jars remained relatively unchanged for periods of 21–34 mo. Viability of the conidia decreased during storage. There was a rapid loss of both viability and aflatoxin-producing ability of moist conidia under similar conditions within 21–60 da. Viability of conidia dried over a desiccant before harvest also decreased rapidly.

SUMMARYForced heterokaryons between auxotrophic strains ofAspergillus nigerproduce rare (10-4) heterokaryotic conidia which can interfere with the selective recovery of somatic diploid strains which occur with a frequency of approximately 10-6. Replating of conidia derived from prototrophic colonies which develop on the selective minimal medium results in enrichment for the somatic diploid since virtually all of the diploid conidia can germinate on the selective medium whereas only 10-4of the conidia derived from heterokaryotic colonies can germinate on the same medium.

摘要:
SUMMARYFresh and dried stromata ofEpichloëtyphina, the cause of choke disease of grasses, were examined for infections by a host-specific fly,Phorbia phrenione.Over 35% of 4,685 stromata from 17 countries growing on about 50 species of grass were parasitized by the fly. The insect does not depend on a particular grass species, but it occurs wherever the fungus is found. The distribution ofE. typhinawithP. phrenioneappears to be restricted to the Northern Hemisphere and ranges from East Asia, throughout Europe and North America including Mexico. The discovery of parasitized stromata inE. cinereaindicates that similar parasitic relationships may exist between other members of the genusEpichloëand insects. The life cycle ofE. typhinaand the hyperparasitic fly are briefly described.
