摘要:
Patient management problems which simulate the collection of diagnostic data have been constructed for presentation to groups on an overhead projector. This presentation has useful educational attributes as a focus for clinical discussions and an aid to tutorial meetings at all levels of clinical medical education, from undergraduate to continuing. The paper describes the materials produced, evaluates the overhead projector as a medium and gives hints to prospective problem constructors.

摘要:
This article examines a range of models for analysis of doctor-patient consultation. The models lie on a continuum which has at one pole the notion of scientific explanation, prediction and control, and at the other the notion of personal understanding. It is argued that all the models are relevant to the work of the general practitioner and that the practitioner needs to acquire a repertoire of skills if patient care is to be improved.

摘要:
George Washington University Medical Center has incrementally instituted a series of curriculum changes over the last 10 years which together constitute a strategy for preparing students with skills to deal with the technological, epidemiological, and social issues which they will face in future medical practice. This article reviews the content of required curriculum revisions which include: a first year course in Methods for Reading the Medical Literature; second year courses in Issues in Health Care, Epidemiology, and Medical Decision Making; third year primary care rotation, preventive medicine and cost containment curriculums; and a recently approved fourth year course which will integrate these activities to develop continuing education skills.

摘要:
Recently, instead of using hospital inpatients for medical student assessment needs, a panel of patients have been trained for clinical assessment use. Apart from their assessment value, they have also provided feedback to the students and Faculty of their satisfaction with the students' clinical skills. Because of doubts that trained patients are a specially selected group which may not represent patients in general, a comparison of patient satisfaction-dissatisfaction reactions with third year medical students was made using hospital inpatients and trained patients. The reactions of the two groups were similar. Hospital inpatients did appear to find students rougher during physical examination which may reflect their convalescent situation.

摘要:
There is increasing interest in the teaching of psychology to undergraduate dental students. This paper describes a course given at Sheffield University, where the topics covered have been chosen after consultation with practising dentists. Those areas which dentists find most troublesome include patients' anxiety, pain, and aspects of the dentist-patient relationship. The course aims to provide undergraduates with some background in the methods of the social sciences as well as to give practical information about psychological therapies.

摘要:
A problem-based approach has been introduced as part of a surgery clerkship, to teach medical students information-seeking skills.Students are given an assignment before an information search seminar, to work independently to resolve one of two patient problems and in the process record each step of their information seeking. Students answer questions about the patient's management on a card before the seminar. During the seminar the students report their competence on using medical information sources and are able to assess their own efficacy in comparison to an expert information seeker. Students have responded favourably to the seminars.

摘要:
In most medical schools with more traditional curricula, the subject of social medicine is likely to have caused difficulties, e.g. due to negative expectations and reactions from the students. At the Karolinska Institute, a 2-week course has been redesigned to include more project work and fewer lectures, practical experience preceding theoretical studies, a problem-oriented written test, etc. The purpose was to achieve a positive influence on interest, involvement, and understanding among the students as well as to provide them with an overall view of the issues in social medicine. This article describes the difficulties encountered in the past as well as the new course design. Further, it presents highlights of the results from a series of evaluations comparing the old and the new course structures.

摘要:
Classroom and patient education research both support the premise that allocated instructional time and active learner involvement influence relevant outcomes. Unfortunately, these two common sense variables have not often been applied in either classrooms or health care settings. In this paper, the educational literature supporting the importance of instructional time and active involvement will be briefly reviewed. The application and significance of time-related variables in patient education will then be discussed and suggestions for improving patient education programs offered.
