The authors defined the concept of femoral torsion using three axes and two planes. Two techniques were used to measure the femoral anteversion angle on 30 femurs of 15 adult mixed breed dogs. The conventional fluoroscopic technique was compared to the right angle triangle technique. The mean angle for each technique was 30.80 and 31.31 degrees, respectively. The right angle triangle technique, using conventional radiographs, appeared as reliable, accurate, and reproducible as the fluoroscopic method and is recommended for clinical use.

Premature distal radial physeal closure, while not as commonly diagnosed as premature closure of the distal ulnar physis, presented a surgical problem in the 11 cases reviewed. The diagnosis was suggested by clinical signs including lameness, angular deformity of the forelimb, pain, crepitation, and limited range of motion in the elbow. Radiographic examination confirmed the diagnosis. Surgical treatment depended on the abnormalities present. Two animals with growth potential were treated by resecting the restricting physeal bone bridge and placing an autogenous fat graft in the defect. Corrective osteotomy procedures for seven animals with total closure of the physis were directed toward re‐establishing functional elbow anatomy by radial osteotomy or correcting angular limb deformity with an oblique radial osteotomy. This study evaluated postoperative sequelae following a sternotomy closed with transsternal and parasternal sutures in nine dogs. Wound complications noted within 30 days suggested excessive intraoperative trauma to bone or surrounding soft tissues. Radiographic evaluation at the end of this period demonstrated a significant lack of osseous bridging between the sternal halves in eight of nine dogs. There was frequent wire breakage, suggesting instability of the sternal halves and considerable midline inaccuracy when splitting the sternum. Postoperative pain was minimal. This technique is suitable for use in dogs provided that swaged‐on needles and sufficient transsternal wires are used, the sternebrae are carefully split on the midline, and the wires are carefully twisted to assure a tight closur

Diagnostic peritoneal lavage was performed one, two or three days following experimental resection and anastomosis of the distal jejunum in nine dogs. The lavage fluid was evaluated by total and differential cell counts, cell morphology, and bacterial culture. Microscopic examination revealed large numbers of nondegenerate neutrophils and mononuclear cells. Bacteria were not observed. Bacterial cultures yielded no growth.Peritonitis was experimentally induced in four dogs by creating an ischemic segment of jejunum. Peritoneal lavage and fluid analysis were carried out one or two days following surgery. The lavage fluid from these dogs contained large numbers of degenerate neutrophils and bacteria.

Polydioxanone (PDS™) synthetic absorbable suture material was evaluated in 169 dogs and cats. Sutures or ligatures were used on 446 tissues including 18 contaminated and 16 infected wounds. There was less tissue friction than with polyglycolic acid or polyglactin 910 sutures. The suture tended to kink during placement of continuous suture patterns. A rostral mandibulectomy was performed on three dogs with mandibular neopiasia. The technique involves stabilization of the mandibular rami, excision of the mandible rostral to the frenulum of the tongue, and cosmetic closure of the wound. Two patients were living 11 months postoperatively. This technique is effective in treating some malignant neoplasms of the rostral mandible.

The femoropatellar joints of four mature, clinically normal horses were surgically entered by a craniolateral or a lateral approach. Visualization of intra‐articular structures was documented for each approach. Horses were euthanized 21, 42, and 63 days after surgery. Joint healing was evaluated clinically, and the joints were subjected to gross pathological and histopathological examination. Healing was by first intention following arthrotomy in six limbs. Skin dehiscence occurred in two limbs with healing by second intention. Subcutaneous seromas developed which resulted in peri‐incisional swelling in seven limbs. The lateral approach to the femoropatellar joint provided greater exposure of the lateral femoral trochlear ridge and articular surface of the patella.Surgery was performed on nine joints of seven clinical patients with osteochondritis dissecans. The craniolateral approach was used on four joints, and the lateral approach was used on five joints. Skin dehiscence occurred following four arthrotomies. The nasal septum was surgically removed from 22 horses with upper airway obstruction caused by thickening and/or deviation of the septum. The most common presenting complaints were a low‐pitched, snoring, respiratory noise and respiratory difficulty during exercise, which usually occurs in young horses. Abnormalities of the septum were most commonly congenital defects or caused by trauma or inflammation secondary to severe respiratory infection.Diagnosis was made based on history, clinical signs, and results of physical examination. Radiography and endoscopy were useful adjuncts in some horses.Under general anesthesia, the septum was removed by scalpel and osteotome (19 horses) or by obstetrical wire and osteotome (1 horse). In two horses, the rostral one third of the septum was removed by scalpel alone.In three horses, the alar folds and floor of the nasal diverticula were removed in an attempt to relieve airway obstruction caused by flattening of the bridge of the nose following removal of the nasal septum.Follow‐up was obtained on 18 horses: persistent noise during exercise continued in 90%; however, 50% returned to usefuln

Limb wounds of three horses were managed by delayed wound closure. In each, the wound was such that it was unlikely that healing would occur following primary closure and that second intention healing would have been unsatisfactory. Wounds were cleaned and debrided at the time of admission and maintained under sterile pressure bandages until free of infection and devitalized tissue. Suture closure of the wound at that time resulted in satisfactory healing in each case.
