摘要:
Fourteen horses and one pony, 1 to 16 years of age, were castrated with a technique designed to promote primary healing and ablation of the scrotum following removal of descended testicles. Twenty‐six testicles (10 nondescended, 15 normal descended testicles, and 1 neoplastic descended testicle) were removed. Nondescended testicles were removed through a skin incision over the external inguinal ring. Descended testicles were removed, and the scrotum was ablated by excision of the ventral scrotum. All testicles were removed by emasculation. The common vaginal tunic was not opened prior to emasculation of the descended testicles, and transfixation liqation sutures were used in only two horses. All incisions were closed with multiple layers of synthetic absorbable sutures in the subcutaneous and subcuticular tissues. All incisions healed by primary intention, and 14 recovered without complications. As a result of incomplete scrotal ablation, one horse had temporary lameness and swelling of the scrotal area that resembled the presurgical appearanc

摘要:
To facilitate blood collection from blood donor dogs, arteriovenous fistulas were established between the common carotid arteries and external jugular veins in five adult dogs. Twelve to 16 mm, side‐to‐side anastomoses were created using simple interrupted 6–0 polypropylene sutures. Starting 1 month after the surgical procedure, 500 ml of blood was collected from each dog as required. Electrocardiography, thoracic radiography, and cardiac output and rate were used to monitor cardiac changes. Blood flow characteristics, and proliferative and dystrophic cellular changes occurring in the vessels were documented in one dog.The mean blood collection times were 2 minutes and 45 seconds from the fistula site and 9.0 minutes from the opposite jugular vein. Ventricular hypertrophy and myocardial changes were observed on electrocardiogram in two dogs, and radiographic evidence of pulmonary hypertension was noted in three dogs. Reversed blood flow was documented in the common carotid artery and external jugular vein distal to the arteriovenous fistula. Four dogs were still in use as blood donors 1 to 1 1/2 years after establishment of the fistulas. Clinical signs of congestive heart failure were not obs

摘要:
The feasibility of repairing an arterial defect with a graft was evaluated in the horse. Arterial autografts, venous autografts, and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) vascular prostheses were used. Four 3 cm grafts of each type were used to replace a 3 cm section of medial palmar artery that had been removed from 12 forelimbs of 11 horses. Patency was assessed by arteriography performed 30 days after the grafting procedure. All four arterial autografts, one of four venous autografts, and two of four PTFE grafts were patent at 30 days. Thrombosis caused the failure of one venous autograft and two PTFE grafts. Fibrous replacement caused the failure of two venous autografts. Results indicate that arterial grafting is feasible in the horse.

摘要:
Zygomatic (supraorbital) process fracture of the horse is a common injury; if untreated, permanent injury to the eye or an undesirable cosmetic appearance may result. A noninvasive surgical reduction technique is described that requires minimal instrumentation and can easily be performed in a surgical facility or under field conditions. This technique has resulted in successful reduction and healing in 12 of 13 cases of zygomatic process fractures.

摘要:
Compression plating of a transverse mid‐diaphyseal radial fracture in a 4‐month‐old Arabian filly resulted in subluxation of the ulna. Two screws transfixed the radius to the ulna and resulted in synostoses. This was followed by uncoordinated growth of the radius and ulna, and subluxation of the ulna. Progressive remodeling of the ulna subsequently reestablished articular congruity between the humerus and

摘要:
Complete displaced lateral condylar fractures of the metacarpus with triangular osteochondral fragments at the palmar articular surface occurred in two Thoroughbred horses. The condylar fractures were repaired with cortical bone screws following removal of the osetochondral fragments via a dorsal arthrotomy and distraction of the condyles. One horse raced successfully after surgery, and the other is being used successfully as an English pleasure mount.
