摘要:
Subtotal intracapsular prostatectomy was performed on five normal dogs. All dogs were maintained for 60 days postoperatively. No urinary abnormalities were noted following surgery with the exception of transient urinary incontinence in one dog that lasted for 7 days. Upon termination of the study, the prostatic urethra had reepithelized in all dogs where a dorsal strip of epithelium was left in place during surgery.

Luxation of the humeral head by internal rotation of theforelimb with the shoulder joint in flexion will maximize exposure of the humeral head for treatment of osteochondritis dissecans of the canine shoulder. The procedure was performed on 51 normal dogs and on 13 shoulders of 11 dogs with osteochondritis dissecans. Postoperative evaluation was obtained in all 51 normal dogs and 8 clinical patients. Postoperative seromas were seen in two dogs; one was presumed to be due to reaction to the suture material used, and the other to unrestricted exercise during the immediate postoperative period. There were no other complications. The time for recovery to normal ambulation was similar to those reported for other approaches.

The development of dog‐ears of redundant skin or removal of large areas of additional skin are problems often encountered when closing circular skin defects. Defects 3 cm in diameter were created along the backs of dogs. Eight techniques of reconstruction were evaluated by measuring the area of additional skin removed and length of final suture line and by counting the number of dog‐ears produced. The eight techniques were linear, fusiform, double S, three point, four point, pin wheel, bow tie, and combined V closures. Based on the results of this study, the linear, combined V, and bow tie techniques provide the best closure. In general, the linear technique should be used when skin edges can be apposed without the formation of dog‐ears (e.g., smaller defects). When skin edge apposition results in dog‐ear formation and when there is limited skin for reconstruction surrounding the defect, the combined V technique should be used. When larger dog‐ears form as the skin edges are apposed and when there is an abundance of skin surrounding the defect, the bow tie technique could be considered for closure. Reconstruction of the caudal thoracic wall using the technique of diaphragmatic advancement is described in two dogs. The technique effectively reestablishes integrity of the thoracic cavity following resection of the thoracic wall supported by ribs 9 through 13. The diaphragm is incised near its peripheral attachments, advanced forward, and sutured to the epaxial musculature and the intercostal muscles of the most caudal intact rib. Diaphragmatic advancement is simple to perform and gives satisfactory cosmetic results, eliminating the need for more complex procedures such as tissue grafts or the use of prosthetic materials.

Hollow viscus perforation and leakage were treated successfully in eight dogs by suturing the surface of a loop of healthy bowel over the leaking areas, forming a serosal patch. The technique also was employed in three dogs and one cat to reinforce areas of potential leakage in the urinary bladder, small intestine, and colon.Healthy bowel serosa was used to seal perforations in both clean‐contaminated and grossly infected visceral wounds. Editor's note: The holding of the 19th Annual Meeting of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in Philadelphia in conjunction with the Centennial Celebration of the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania provides an opportunity for reflection. Dr. Jacques Jenny, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the School, was Chairman of the Organizing Committee that gave rise to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons on December 16,1965, and was elected as first President of the College. The solid foundation and high ideals that the Organizing Committee established are in large part responsible for the success of the College. Dr. Jenny died on November 20, 1971. Those of us fortunate to have known him personally realize the immense gap that his premature death left. For those that did not know him, I hope that this article permits some appreciation of the contributions of Dr. Jenny the comparative orthopedic surgeon, as well as of the very special human qualities of Jacques Jenny the man. The first author, Dr. Mark Allam, was Professor of Surgery and Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine during most of Dr. Jenny's career at the University of Pennsylvania, and was the first Chairman of the Board of Regents of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. The second author, Dr. David Nunamaker, is the first holder of the Jacques Jenny Professorship in Veterinary Orthopedics at the University of Pennsylvania.
