ABSTRACTSelected data pertaining to management of delivery are compared for United States resident nurse‐midwives who participated in 1976 to 1977 and 1982 national surveys of nurse‐midwives conducted by the American College of Nurse‐Midwives. Of the 1213 United States residents who participated in the 1976 to 1977 survey, 521 (43.0%) were managing deliveries, and 937 (59.2%) of the 1584 residents who participated in the 1982 survey were managing deliveries. Nurse‐midwives who participated in the 1982 survey were found to be working in private practices, conducting deliveries, and providing continuity of care more frequently than nurse‐midwives who participated in the 1976 to 1977 survey. Except for manual removal of the placenta, nurse‐midwives who participated in the 1982 survey used procedures associated with potentially high‐risk or problematic situations less often than nurse‐midwives who participated in the 1976

ABSTRACTAn interview study of 23 pre‐ and postmenarcheal girls was conducted to explore the experience of menarche. The subjective data obtained is presented in four categories: 1) emotional readiness for the event, 2) physical and emotional responses to the event, 3) cognitive understanding of the event, and 4) incorporation of the event into a developing self‐identity. ABSTRACTThe literature on the topics of quickening and auscultation of fetal heart tones as estimators of the gestational interval is reviewed. An historical overview of the use of these two events in determining the gestational interval is presented and a summary of the research on these topics is provided. Although limited, the research on each of these estimators demonstrates that the weeks of gestation at which each event occurs is highly variable among women. The use of either of these events as the only method of estimating the gestational interval is discouraged.

ABSTRACTThe greatest danger in a prolonged pregnancy is to the infant. Postmaturity is second only to prematurity as a cause of fetal and neonatal mortality. This article delineates predisposing maternal risk factors, various antepartum screening tests, symptoms of the infant postmaturity syndrome, and the long‐term infant effects of a prolonged pregnancy as reported in recent literature. Various types of management plans for prolonged pregnancies are presented in the literature. They range from automatic induction to a “wait and see” attitude. ABSTRACTThe American College of Nurse‐Midwives International Project for Traditional Birth Attendants is working with the Ministry of Health in Tanzania. This paper describes the approach and process used to initiate and implement a maternal child health and family planning program for traditional birth attendants in the Arusha Region. The first step was a needs assessment, followed by the initiation of a planning group. Implementation began with training Maternal Child Health Aides who in turn trained traditional birth attendants.
