摘要:
AbstractThe burst‐mode link analyser with the decompositional least‐squares algorithm (BMLA/LS) is an attractive and novel computational approach for impulse response measurement and equalization of a QPSK/TDMA satellite communication channel. Analysis and simulation confirms it to be superior to the current BMLA/radar approach. This paper presents a brief and systematic introduction to the methodology of the subject, and to software simulation, system design and hardware implementat

摘要:
AbstractThe paper presents the results of an extensive series of computer‐simulation tests to determine the effects of bandlimiting, nonlinear distortion with and without predistortion, and adjacent channel interference (ACI), on the tolerance to additive white Gaussian noise of a digital satellite modem. The modem transmits a differentially encoded quaternary phase‐shift keyed (DEQPSK) signal over a satellite link, where the high‐power amplifier (HPA) at the earth‐station transmitter may introduce AM—AM and AM—PM conversion effects into the DEQPSK signal, but the satellite transponder is linear. Four different bandwidths of the transmitted signal are tested, together with three different levels of output back‐off in the HPA at the transmitter. The predistorter operates on the baseband signal at the input to the modulator in the transmitter and assumes a prior knowledge of the HPA characteristics. ACI can be introduced into the transmitted DEQPSK signal by the corresponding DEQPSK signals, which occupy the two immediately adjacent frequency bands. The latter signals are assumed to have the same transmission rate and bandwidths as the first signal.Various combinations of the different distortion and interference effects are studied, using an equivalent baseband model of the transmission system, and the arrangements selected are those achieving the most efficient use of bandwidth together with the best tolerance to additive white Gaussian noise. A surprisingly good performanc

AbstractA recent conference of the ITU has agreed upon worldwide frequency allocations near 1600 MHz for communication by satellite with mobile stations on land, and has permitted the use of some aeronautical mobile‐satellite frequency bands for passengers' in‐flight telephone calls to the ground. 摘要:
AbstractAt present a major effort is under way to define the most efficient modulation/multiple access system in mobile satellite communication. Where the emphasis is on digital voice modulation, the proposed multiple access methods almost always imply frequency division multiple access (FDMA). This analysis presents a comparison between FDMA and code division multiple access (CDMA), for the operation of both multiple access methods in the mobile satellite communication environment. The mobile satellites under consideration use multiple‐beam or scan‐beam antennas and employ frequency reuse of the allocatedL‐band frequency spectrum. As CDMA is better at absorbing Doppler and multipath effects, and permits higher rate coding, in general (practical considerations aside) it appears to be the more capable s

摘要:
AbstractThe application of propagation theory to the structure and control of adaptive networks designed to cancel hydrometeor‐induced cross‐polarization in microwave communication links is summarized. When adaptive cross‐coupling networks are realized at radio frequency as variable waveguide polarizers, desirable simplifications are to make them lossless devices with at most two free parameters. Performance calculations for such simplified forms are fully reviewed.Several new approaches to the design of controllers for the cancelling networks are also made possible. New results are presented on the performance of systems which use only one pilot tone, or even dispense with cross‐polar measurement completely. It is also shown that the reciprocity of the hydrometeor medium, an apparently safe assumption, makes possible an extract precorrection of a transmitted polarization if control is based on a beacon signal of the orthogonal polarization sent back from the receivin

摘要:
AbstractThe outcome of a preliminary systems cost study which compares the cost of operating INTELSAT intermediate data rate (IDR) and time division multiple access (TDMA) stations under various conditions is reported. The differences in the annual cost of operating the two candidate methods over the range of 1 to 1000 terrestrial channels are derived under the conditions of no CME, DSI only and the use of DCME. For DCME the effect of one, two, three and four destinations per DCME is considered. The results show that while the initial cost of the TDMA equipment is higher than with IDR, the annual cost of operating the systems is dominated by the space segment costs. For this reason the greater bandwidth efficiency, inherent multidestinational capability and ease of capacity expansion of the TDMA system give it a lower annual operating cost, even at fairly moderate earthstation capacities (e.g. for DCME with two destinations TDMA becomes cheaper than IDR for capacities in excess of about 300 channels). There are attributes of both systems which will also influence the network planners' decision. The IDR system is modular in that costs associated with implementation are incurred more gradually than with the TDMA system. Furthermore, IDR is to a great extent an extrapolation of the current FDM/FM/FDMA practice. However, since the equipment costs are small compared to the space segment charges, it may prove advantageous to adopt the lowercost system as soon as possible. In addition, the TDMA system offers significant long‐term advantages of low‐cost expansion and the ability to reconfigure the system with minimal or no loss of traf

摘要:
AbstractA satellite earth‐station is affected by added radio noise from the Sun when the Sun passes behind the satellite as seen from the earth‐station. In the following, an exact analysis of this solar transit is derived, and an approximate method is presented for practical cases. Moreover, networks of very small aperture satellite terminals (VSATs) operating atKu‐band microwave frequencies of 12–14 GHz behave differently during the solar transit period than the more traditionalC‐ orKu‐band satellite networks; therefore analytical and experimental results for VSATs have been presented. An explanation is given, based on these analyses, of why solar transit outages are rarer in VSATs than in conventional satellite communicati
