摘要:
This paper offers a general review of literature on issues pertinent to unilateral hearing loss in children. The paper focuses on such areas as demographic considerations, the importance of binaural hearing, the effects of noise on speech recognition, learning and educational factors, and auditory deprivation. It is concluded that there is sufficient evidence to suspect that children with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss can experience complications in communication and education. Finally, this paper presents the description of a research plan used in our study on unilateral sensorineural hearing loss in children.

摘要:
This paper presents the data from medical and educational case histories on a group of 60 unilaterally hearing-impaired children. The case history data revealed that approximately one-half of the 60 children with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss exhibited some difficulty in educational progress. More specifically, 35% had failed at least one grade and an additional 13% were in need of some special resource assistance. Similar findings were obtained on a subset of 25 unilaterally hearing-impaired children who satisfied rather stringent criteria for age, hearing level, intelligence, length of time the impairment was present, history of middle ear disease, and general growth and development.

摘要:
Horizontal sound localization and syllable recognition skills were examined in a group of children with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss and a matched group of normal hearers. The results showed that the unilaterally hearing-impaired children performed more poorly than the normal counterparts in both localization and speech recognition of nonsense syllables. The unilaterally hearing-impaired children had considerable difficulty understanding in a background of noise. The clinical implications of these findings are discussed.

摘要:
A group of 25 normal-hearing children aged 6 to 13 years was compared to a group of 25 children manifesting a unilateral hearing impairment of at least 45 dB HL. The two groups were matched on age, I.Q., socio-economic status, sex, and race. Thirty-two percent of the hearing-impaired children failed a grade in school, while none of the normal-hearing children failed. This group of children who failed in school exhibited verbal I.Q.s which were significantly lower than those children who succeeded in school. However, few differences were found between the two groups on a battery of standardized language tests.

摘要:
Children with unilateral hearing loss have been considered to have few, if any, communication or academic difficulties. This study was designed to evaluate the academic achievement, cognitive ability, psycholinguistic, and social skills of a group of 25 monaurally hearing-impaired compared with 25 nonhearing-impaired children. Results indicated no significant differences between the two groups on cognitive or self-concept measures. However, the unilateral group had significantly lower scores on academic tests of word recognition, spelling, and language. The unilateral group was more likely to have repeated a grade, needed special education resource help, or additional tutoring in school. Within the unilateral group, children with severe-to-profound hearing loss had significantly lower WISC-R full scale I.Q.s as compared to the group with mild-to-moderate hearing loss. The results of this study suggest that monaural deafness, especially when severe to profound, may be associated with cognitive and academic deficits, as well as secondary behavioral adjustment problems.

摘要:
Because some unilaterally hearing-impaired children appear to experience difficulty in communication and educational progress, it seems only appropriate to reassess the identification and management strategies that are used with these children. Accordingly, this paper presents some general information on identification, assessment, and management of children with unilateral hearing loss from the perspective of three disciplines: audiology, speech-language pathology, and psychology.

摘要:
This paper offers a summary of the general findings from a study on unilateral sensorineural hearing loss as well as some comments with regard to possible reasons for outcome. Additional comments are provided on the management of unilaterally hearing-impaired children, future directions for research, and an emphasis on the limitations and interpretations of this investigation.
