摘要:

All RNA viruses that cause cancer under natural conditions fall into the“retro”category, meaning that the first step in their replication is the“reverse transcription”of RNA into DNA. This peculiarity of their biologic behavior has helped explain other intriguing features of these viruses and opened new directions for future research into the role of viruses in altering the infected cell's genetic material and in oncogenesis.

摘要:

The type and to some extent the size of prosthesis are by far the most important factors determining the patient's prognosis. Extensive necropsy experience shows that in terms hemodynamics, thrombogenesis, and deterioration—the three major criteria—none of the four main types of prosthetic valves in use today is ideal. Emphasis is placed on the role of the referring cardiologist in the choice of surgeon and prosthesis.

Rapid diagnosis on the basis of simple clinical signs and immediate, aggressive therapy are required in handling such newborn problems as persistence of fetal circulatory patterns, respiratory distress syndrome, and acute necrotizing enterocolitis.

Since hemoglobin and hematocrit values tend to be low in the elderly, confirming the presence of anemia and establishing its etiology involve complex considerations. Also discussed are such proliferative disorders as chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Customary methods of correcting curvature of the spine—surgery for severely afflicted adults and use of the so-called Milwaukee brace for youngsters—have a number of drawbacks. Among the improved approaches now becoming available are lighter, less obtrusive braces such as an orthoplast jacket molded to the individual's torso, electrostimulation of paraspinal muscles, and implantation of a rod to distract the spine.
