Too often, suggests Dr. Lillehei, the decision to embark on a program of open-heart surgery is motivated by considerations of prestige or by a desire to“keep up”for the sake of“keeping up.”Here the pioneer developer of open-heart surgery calls upon a decade of experience to formulate criteria for the establishment of such facilities on a basis which will assure optimal patient care and provide a realistic appraisal of the commitment that must be made in money, in time and in talent.

Dr. Smith believes it may be time to explore the application of some of these experimental findings to clinical situations.
