摘要:
SUMMARYErythrocladia subintegrahas been cultured for over 3 years. The life history includes reproduction by monospores, a long period of ameboid motility by monospores, their germination and growth into monostromatic disk‐shaped plantlets composed of adherent, often dichotomously branched filaments. Plants become centrally polystromatic with age and produce monospores. Variations in plant size and shape, cell size and shape, spore size, shape, and motility are discussed. Variations in plants ofE. subintegragrown on different substrates have been studied and discussed in relation to other species in the genu

摘要:
SUMMARYPulchrasphaera macronucleatagen. et sp. nov. was isolated from a sand dune on Dauphin Island, Alabama. The distinguishing attributes of the genus include a lobed and perforate parietal chloroplast, lack of pyrenoids, andProtosiphon‐type zoospores. The specific epithet calls attention to the unusually large nucleus, a character useful in distinguishingP. macronucleatafrom other spherical, zoospore producing members of the Chlorococcale

摘要:
SUMMARYCultures ofChlorella vulgariswere grown aulo‐trophically under fluorescent light and heterotrophically on glucose and inorganic salts. Hydrocarbons were extracted and analyzed by gas‐liquid chromatography, molecular sieve separations, and silicic acid‐AgNO3chromatography.Chlorella vulgarisgrown under both culture conditions contained a series of saturated n‐paraffins ranging from 17 to 36 carbon atoms in length. This is in contrast to reports in the early literature which indicated that the hydrocarbon fraction of algae was composed of only 1 or 2 specific hydrocarbons. Only under heterotrophic conditions, however, didC. vulgarisproduce 1‐penta‐cosene and 1‐heptacosene as the primary components of the hydrocarbon mixture. OtherChlorellaspecies were examined, but onlyC. vulgarisproduced significant quantities of th

摘要:
SUMMARYAcid phosphatase activity inClosterium acerosumhas been studied using the Gomori and the azo dye procedures. A modification of the Gomori method was used for detecting the distribution of acid nucleases. The plastid is the major site of acid phosphatase activity luhich may be primarily within pyrenoids, between pyrenoids, or throughout the plastid. The Gomori procedure showed activity within the pyrenoids or in the central core of the plastid, whereas the azo dye method showed activity throughout with an occasional tendency to be localized near the ends. No other cytoplasmic activity was ob‐served but evidence for occasional activity in the nucleus is presented. Alkaline phosphatase could not be detected. Acid nuclease activity, which results in the degradation of DNA, RNA, and RNA‐Core, has been found in both the nucleus and the plastid. Plastid activity is heat labile, whereas nuclear activity is only slightly diminished after 5 min at 100 C. The results arc interpreted as indicating at least 2 acid phosphatases and 2 nucleases inC. acerosum. The findings are discussed with respect to the distribution of similar enzymes in other organi

摘要:
SUMMARYThe nutrition of the free‐living phase ofConchocelisofP. tenerawas studied axenically.Conch‐ocelispreferred NO3, as nitrogen source. Urea and NH4in low concentration, asparagine, and lysine were very good N sources. Several other amino acids were also utilized but growth was less abundant. Inorganic and organic phosphates were utilized; they were required at relatively low concentrations. Glycerophosphate gave excellent growth in a comparatively wide range of concentrations (0.1‐5 mg P %). The optimal Ca concentration was 10‐100 mg %. Needs for boron, manganese, zinc, strontium, rubidium, lithium, and iodine were demonstrated. The iodine effect was remarkable (peak growth with 1μg %); the effective concentration range was very narrow. Iron, cobalt, and bromine seemed to be adequately supplied as impurities of the macro‐nutrients. A modified artificial medium (ASP12I) for theConchocelisphase is

摘要:
SUMMARYA second record of the occurrence ofPorphyridium sordidumGeitler 1932 is reported. Cultures were obtained by plating crude material on agar plates of various salinities with the higher salinities selectively favoring the growth of this species. Proposed synonymy ofP. sordidumwithP. cruentumis rejected. The author suggests that more attention be given to the establishment and use of depositories for living unialgal, reference cultures in taxonomical work on the more delicate algae, and that taxonomical manipulations of such forms based only upon word descriptions and the study of dried herbarium material should be viewed with a degree of caution.

摘要:
SUMMARYUltrastructural studies conducted on the intracellular symbiont ofGlaucocystis nostochinearumItz., a unicellular alga with a debated taxonomic position, have shown that the endosymbiont, although somewhat aberrant, is a blue‐green alga. Due possibly to its intracellular habitat, it lacks the characteristic cyanophycean double‐layered cell wall and the cells appear to be completely naked, bound only by a single plasma membrane. The protoplasm of the cell is differentiated into the lamellated chromatoplasm, which contains the photosynthetic pigments and polyphosphate granules, and a nonlamellar ccntroplasm, in which the nucleic material is dispersed. The usual cyanophycean organelles, as well as the different vacuoles and granules, with the exception of the formed bodies, are missing. Approximately 10% of the cells sliows a peculiar homogeneous area at one tip, the nature of which is unknown. Binary fission of the organism is mentioned. Since this cyanelle has not yet been classified, we name itSkujapelta nudanov. gen., nov. sp.; and because of its structural peculiarities we find it necessary to create a new family for it, Skujapeltaceae in the order Chroococca

摘要:
SUMMARYMarine blue‐green algae, Lyngbya Lagerheimii, Microcoleus chthonoplastes, Plectonema terebrans, Agmenellum quadruplicatum, and freshwater blue‐green algae, Anacystis nidulans, Anabaena variabilis, Nostoc muscorura, and Oscillatoria sp. treated with lysozyme (muramidase) formed spheroplasts but not protoplasts. The time needed for spheroplast induction varied with the species. Approximate internal osmotic pressures of the blue‐green algae were determined. Marine algae generally had a higher osmotic pressure than freshwater
