摘要:
ABSTRACTThree of ten cultures ofGonyaulax excavata(Braarud) Balech isolated from the 1972 New England red tide are nonluminescent, Biochemical components of dinoflagellate bioluminescence were not detected in the extracts from these three isolates. Cells of the nonluminescent cultures were identical to those of luminescent cultures as compared by light microscopy, major body plate tabulation, cell size and growth. Both luminescent and nonluminescent cells were toxic as determined by using the mouse bioassay for paralytic shellfish poisoning. All the 122 clones made from one of the luminescent isolates were luminescent suggesting this feature is a stable trait. We conclude that these isolates represent luminescent and luminescent strains ofG. excavata. This is the first intraspecific investigation of in vitro bioluminescent components between nonluminescent and luminescent strains of a dinoflagellate.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe ultrastructure of the oval, fusiform and triradiate morphotypes ofPhaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin is described. The organization and structure of the cytoplasmic organelles is similar in all three morphotypes, except that the vacuoles occupy the extra volume created by the arms of the fusiform and triradiate cells. The frustule in fusiform and triradiate cells is organic; in the oval type it may be organic or one of the valves may have a silica frustule surrounded by an organic wall. In all cells, the organic cell wall has up to 10 silica bands (13 nm wide) embedded in its surface in the girdle region, lacks girdle bands, and has an outer corrugated cell wall layer, except in the girdle region. Cell division, organic wall formation and silica deposition are described in detail. Four types of oval cells are also described. The relation to other diatoms is discussed.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe life history ofCallithamnion byssoidesArnott ex Harv. in Hook. from North Carolina is shown to be of thePolysiphonia‐type. Cross‐gradient light‐temperature culture in 8:16 and 14:10 LD cycles was utilized to investigate the effects of light intensity, temperature and day‐length on growth and reproduction. Carposporophyte and tetrasporangium development were controlled by total light energy rather than photoperiod. Results of these studies explain the observed seasonal periodicity of growth and reproduction on the North Carolina coast. Variations between these results and previously published data for this species in Texas are explained in terms of ecotypic differen

摘要:
ABSTRACTModels of the diatom associations found in upper Florida Bay and adjoining sounds have been constructed utilizing Q modal factor‐vector analysis and ecologic diversity indices (Shannon index, number of species, evenness). Four distinct associations were defined using Q‐mode factor‐vector analysis. Two associations were epiphytic, occurring onThalassia testudinumKönig—Association I was characterized byCocconeis placentulaEhr., Association III byCylindrotheca closterium(Ehr.) Reim.&Lewin andCocconeis placentulaEhr. The other two associations were epipelic, occurring on the carbonate mud substratum—Association II was characterized byCyclotella striata(Kütz.) Grun.,Rhopalodia gibberula(Ehr.) O. Müller andSurirella fastuosa(Ehr.) Kütz., Association IV byFragilaria crotonensisKitton andCyclotella striata(Kütz.) Grun. The majority of the 161 species identified were present in both the epiphytic and epipelic assemblages. Only 33 species were restricted to the epiphyton, and 18 species restricted to the epipelon. The epipelic assemblage was significantly more diverse than was the epiphytic assemblage. A general trend of increased diversity away from terrestrial environs toward more open areas of water in both the epipelon and epiphyton

摘要:
ABSTRACTKinetics of uptake of inorganic carbon by the freshwater green algaChlamydomonas reinhardtiiDang. suggest that rates of fixation may be enhanced at low tensions of CO2by transport of bicarbonate from the cell surface to the chloroplast. Results are evaluated in the context of models that treat diffusion and reaction of dissolved inorganic carbon across a 3 dimensional finite boundary layer, and they are consistent with the claim that CO2alone is the substrate used during carbon fixation. An alternative hypothesis, which presumes that both CO2and bicarbonate are used as substrates, yields predictions which are inconsistent with the data. Instead, bicarbonate seems to act only as a vehicle for the transport of inorganic carbon into the cell, thereby adding its flux to that of CO2, and enhancing rates of synthesis that would otherwise be restricted by uptake of CO2alone.

摘要:
ABSTRACTCopper toxicity toSkeletonema costatum(Grev.) Cleve has been studied in batch cultures of chemically defined culture media. The alga is relatively insensitive to cupric ion activity, demonstrating no effect on growth up to (Cu2+) = 10−8.5M. Cultures inoculated from stationary phase stocks exhibit a prolongation of the lag phase with increasing copper concentrations near and above the point of precipitation of the copper. The toxicity of copper is a function of the silicic acid concentration in the medium. This effect is observed in a range of Si(OH)4concentrations (10−5M to 10−4M) above known values for the saturation of silicon uptake kinetics, thus suggesting an influence of copper on silicate metab

ABSTRACTAgardhiella coulteri(Harvey) Setchell (Solieriaceae) from the Pacific coast of North America is presently included in the circumscription ofNeoagardhiella baileyi(Kützing) Wynne&Taylor from the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. Examination of fresh, liquid‐preserved and dried Pacific material has shown a different medullary and cystocarpic structure from specimens in eastern North America. The Pacific specimens are being removed fromN. baileyitoN. gaudichaudiicomb. nov., based onGigartina gaudichaudiiMontagne, the oldest available name for the Pacific material.
