摘要:
It is shown that the engineer's function, the development of an expanding productive capacity in society, may contribute to creation of a gap between production-capacity and consumption-demand. When this occurs adiversionarythat does not contribute immediately to perceived consumption-needs serves a useful purpose. It is suggested that the main driving forces of an economic system may reside in production activity rather than in consumption. A number of examples are given to demonstrate the validity of this hypothesis. These range from the monument-building programs of ancient civilizations to the modern space program. The role of export competition between nations leading to present day payments balances is shown as just another manifestation of the drive-to-produce dominating the drive-to-consume.

摘要:
Several different procedures for the implementation of the internal rate of return criterion are presented in the literature on investment projects evaluation. Taking the net present worth criterion as a basis for comparison, a survey of some of the suggested procedures and a critique of their theoretical basis are presented. It is showed that, although leading to a proper evaluaticn, they are internally inconsistent in the sense of incorporating modifications that may not really be necessary. To circumvent this possibility, we are going to suggest a conceptual algorithm that should be implemented if we are concerned with the formal application of the internal rate of return criterion.

摘要:
Use of an Investment Acceptance Chart is suggested to clarify an investor's appraisal of capital risk and return. A decision- maker's risk profile sets acceptance limits for outcomes. The main benefit of the chart is convenient visualization of key concepts for risk recognition in capital budgeting.
