摘要:
The Biomedical Instrumentation DepartmentatThomas Jefferson University Hospitalmaintains most of the clinical equipment owned by the hospital and provides support to six other hospitals, as well. In order to document these services, a computerized support system has been developed. This system maintains the inventory of equipment, documents the occurrence of repair and preventive maintenance procedures, generates lists of items due for maintenance and inspection, and prints reports and summaries of all activities performed by departmental staff. The system was designed for ease of use and requires a minimum of training for personnel who use it.

摘要:
A briefcase portable microcomputer (the Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 100TM) forms the hub of a cost-effective preventive maintenance and electrical safety recording system. Programmed in BASICTMand powered by batteries, the portable system has no warm-up or “boot” time. Considerable time is saved by not having to power down and re-activate the program between tested items. Data generated during the inspection are stored in RAM-files until printout. Printouts are user selectable. Equipment interfacing is possible with additional accessories.

摘要:
A discussion of the technical, cultural, economic, and political issues raised by attempts at transfer of biomedical equipment technology is presented here by participants in a workshop.Technology Transfer to the Third World, given at the IEEE-EMB Conference, in Columbus, Ohio, on September 10, 1983. Specific examples of the problems encountered in setting up biomedical equipment shops for clinics, and engineering and biomedical equipment technology educational programs in foreign countries are presented. Emphasis is given to the conditions for survivability of such programs.

摘要:
This paper reports on the development of a computer program to obtain velocity of contraction, velocity of relaxation, and chamber volume utilizing cinefluorographic films of the left ventricle. The volume of the left ventricle is determined by calculating the volume of each quadrant. Velocity of contraction and velocity of relaxation are calculated by dividing the distance by the contraction time or relaxation time, respectively. Furthermore, normalized velocities of contraction and of relaxation are computed for normalized times; the values that would result if the heart rate were 60 beats per minute. Ejection volume is calculated for each quadrant, as well as for the total left ventricle. The system was developed on a PDP 11/45 computer using Version 6 of the Unix operating system. The program was written in the BASIC+ language. This method was evaluated on 20 patients (nine patients had normal global ejection fraction > 50%, the remaining 11 patients had a global ejection fraction of <50%). The results showed a high repeatability of the data analyzed.

摘要:
Whole blood, plasma and packed red cell spin-lattice relaxation time data for 50 human and eight fish samples at 20 MHz, and for 35 human samples at 4 MHz are presented. Calculations based on the fast and intermediate exchange limits of the theory of chemical exchange show no noticeable difference in agreement with the experimental data, indicating that the intermediate exchange limit does not give any better agreement than the fast exchange limit. The two-phase model of chemical exchange, while it may be a gross oversimplification of the real state of affairs, does apply at least as a first approximation to the behavior of water protons in blood. The major contributor to the relaxation rate in erythrocytes is hemoglobin. Fish data show no significant difference from human blood data.

摘要:
The S.R. Powers Trauma Research Center at Albany Medical Center makes a wide variety of standard and specially designed physiological measurements on injured patients. To overcome the disadvantages of admitting patients to a single-bed research unit, a mobile data acquisition system was designed to study patients in the Intensive Care Unit, Burn Unit, Emergency Room, and Recovery Room. This mobile system acquires data using microcomputer controlled data acquisition and communicates via modem with a larger computer located in the Trauma Unit Research Center. The laboratory computer performs data analysis and returns results to the instrument cart at the bedside. A dry spirometer, which is reset on inspiration by the mechanical ventilators, was designed, built, and incorporated into the cart for measuring expired gas volumes and flows.
