摘要:
The Medical Device Amendments of 1976 define the increasingly important role of the FDA in the medical device manufacturer-user relationship. The new requirements imposed on the manufacturer, modifier and produce user must be implemented gradually. Guidance during this initial period is hard to come by, for many situations have not been clearly spelled out and tested. It is hoped that this article will shed some light on what has become an important legal and technical aspect of our profession.

摘要:
Arthritis and other related joint disorders are, today, the most common nonfatal crippling diseases. In every case these joint diseases involve progressive destruction of the articular cartilage. At present, there is no available noninvasive clinical tool which will permit on-going objective evaluation of the relative degree of damage to the articular cartilage. The recently developed computer-aided, electro-acoustical technique, utilizing the acoustic energy emitted by the joint during active articulation, appears to be a promising noninvasive clinical tool. The recent addition of a three-dimensional spectral history plot graphically presents the extent and location of cartilage in a clinically related form.

摘要:
It had been suggested that the electrical impedance of a fluid-filled pressure monitoring catheter might be a function of applied 60 Hertz voltage. If so, the possibility of patient shock hazard might be increased.A variety of catheters were tested with several physiological solutions over a wide range of applied 60 Hertz voltages. No evidence was found to indicate that the resistance of fluid-filled catheters is a function of applied voltage.

摘要:
Fluidic circuits were initially designed as controlling devices for use in situations where the use of electronic circuits was not feasible. With proper design, fluidic controls can be made extremely sensitive and fast operating — even to the extent of rivaling other electronic counterparts. Therefore, in a number of applications, it becomes a matter of preference, rather than necessity, whether fluidic or electronic controls are specified. For example, a fluidic control system and an electronic control system, which perform equivalent functions in the operation of an experimental pneumatic extracorporeal pump for use during open-heart surgery, are described in this paper.

摘要:
A Diastolic Pulsator is a non-invasive external cardiovascular assist device designed for the treatment and management of cardiovascular diseases. A summary of the results of bioengineering systems tests is presented for nine volunteer subjects. Informed consent was obtained. The unique features of the Diastolic Pulsator are the wide range of holding pressures and pulse pressures which are available to assure that the most mechanically effective pulse pressure can be applied to the patient. Holding pressures can be adjusted from 0 to 15 psi, while pulse pressures can be adjusted from 0 to 25 psi in any combination. Tests were conducted with holding pressures at 3, 5, 8, and 10 psi with pulse time delays. The most feasible combinations for holding pressure appear to be 3 to 5 psi with 3 to 8 psi sequence pulse pressures. This investigative medical device is now ready for clinical trials.

摘要:
Despite the simplicity and convenience of microwave heating, descriptions in the current literature of attempts to provide a thorough sterilization process have not been encouraging nor has any manufacturer of sterilization equipment introduced such a device to the market. Trials conducted at Providence Hospital using a commercial microwave oven operating at 2450 MHz resulted in a satisfactory sterilization process, that is, the destruction of heat-resisting spore forms (B. stearothermophilus), provided that the materials undergoing sterilization were placed in sealed containers with sufficient water present to provide steam during the heating process.Suggestions are made for further investigation involving the microwave spectrum of the molecule of dipicolinic acid as well as the possibilities of practical applications which could result in reducing hospital costs.

摘要:
Measurements of blood pressure by the cuff technique do not always correlate with direct catheter measurements. Such differences can be disconcerting to clinical personnel, and can be confusing in the evaluation of a pressure-monitoring system. This paper, which was distributed to the Capital Area Medical Equipment Society (CAMES) as CAMES Technical Note No. 1, provides helpful insights to the problems of comparison of direct and indirect measurements of blood pressure.
