摘要:
The Biomedical Services Department of the Good Samaritan Hospital, located in Central Pennsylvania, has responsibility for preventive maintenance, safety and regulation compliance (appropriate to a biomedical department) and repairs for the Hospital. These services have resulted in substantial cost savings. In addition, the Department's Shared Service activity has produced alternative revenue sources. The combined hospital and shared service inventory of approximately 1100 instruments is serviced by the Department Staff, which consists of one Director and two technicians.

To assess the diagnostic quality of current electrocardiographs in Helsinki hospitals, 156 devices (95 percent from one manufacturer) were tested for performance by means of 11 test parameters. To analyze the devices as a system, afigure of merit(FM) was calculated for each device. Seventy-nine percent of the devices passed the test. The device failure rate increased after the age of five years, and most of the failed devices exceeded 10 years of age. The most important device error was a false ST-segment depression caused by the electrocardiographs themselves. This was revealed by using a triangle pulse to the low-frequency response. This method should be included in international standards. On the basis of economics, the life cycle of an ECG should always exceed six years. However, extending the life cycle beyond five years reduces device reliability. Service costs were found to be insignificant in comparison to capital costs unless the life cycle is beyond 10 years. The results indicate that the present problem in maintenance in Helsinki hospitals is to provide and organize preventive maintenance so as to find the devices in need of service. The costs of preventive maintenance are a small price to pay to ensure the diagnostic accuracy of electrocardiographs. The FM and methods of testing described here may be useful in other areas and in other ECG evaluation programs.

摘要:
This paper presents a general design method that does not require the use of switched transformers or inductors to produce high-voltage output signals when implementing transcutaneous electrical stimulators. This method permits the use of arbitrary stimulating signals, as opposed to the spike or rectangular-pulse waveforms typically produced with conventional designs. By use of a switching power supply, both battery operation and patient isolation are obtained.

Knowledge of absolute cerebral blood flow (CBF) values is important in the diagnosis and treatment of many pathologies of the brain, such as stroke, aneurysms, and degenerative diseases. In this paper, the more important, noninvasive CBF techniques used clinically or deemed promising for future use are reviewed. These are: the radioactive xenon-133 method, the stable xenon/CT method, positron emission tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. In addition, the radiolabeled microsphere technique, which is an invasive method, is discussed because of its established role as a standard of reference. Each method is described briefly, and its advantages and disadvantages are outlined. (This paper is Part I of a two-part series. The second paper will describe the stable xenon/CT method in depth and will appear in the May/June 1987 issue of this Journal.)

This paper describes the design of a real-time, multitasking, multiuser nuclear system* for clinical applications using radioisotopes. The instrumentation includes two groups of 16 nuclear counting channels or one group of 16 nuclear channels and one 256, 1024, or 4096 channel pulse height analyzer, one HP 7475A plotter, and one parallel printer. The instrumentation is designed around an Intel System 310.

This paper concludes theJournal'sseries on Bioengineering Education in the United States. In this issue, college-level programs in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippl, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee are described. These programs range from two-year associate degree programs to four-year bachelor degree, master's degree, doctoral degree, and M.D./Ph.D. combined programs. The intent of this paper is not to evaluate the various programs, but to illustrate the breadth of biomedical and related engineering educational opportunities in this region.
