摘要:
In the continuing development of clinical engineering, new problem areas are beginning to emerge. Issues related to career development are gaining prominence, and job satisfaction, career advancement, and “burnout” are becoming increasingly important. To address these issues, clinical engineers must assume personal responsibility for their own careers. They must broaden their perception of clinical engineering to include a managerial perspective. The extent to which they assume managerial responsibilities is a function of their personal interests and talents. This involvement can range from a consultative role in decisions involving high technology to a position in the institution's top management staff. This broader definition will significantly benefit not only the field of clinical engineering but individual practitioners as well.

Computer-Aided Instruction (CAI) in a Medical Center is discussed and examples are presented for electrical safety and respiratory therapy. A computer program is given in the BASIC language for the DEC PDP 11/23, 34 and 44. The program can be executed in interpreted or compiled BASIC on a general purpose, time-shared computer. The program provides dynamic branching of CRT screen displays to present to the student a sequence of questions. Each test is structured to the student's response by branching ahead or behind in the sequence of questions as specified by the instructor.

摘要:
Three relatively simple devices for improving safety in neonatal intensive care are described. When umbilical artery catheters are used, an inexpensive pressure switch is utilized to detect abnormally low pressures associated with catheter withdrawal or excessive fluid leakage from the catheter system. A capacitive, intravenous-line air bubble detector, consisting of a section of the intravenous line as the dielectric of a capacitor, is used to alert the clinical staff when air bubbles pass between the capacitor plates. An electronic temperature controller maintains the temperature of neonatal breathing gases to avoid temperature variations which occur with presently used techniques. These are relatively simple and inexpensive devices which can be fabricated by most hospital clinical engineering services.

The need for hospital participation in the undergraduate training of Biomedical Electronics Technicians is discussed in this paper, along with methodology for the training program. The cooperation of a technology school and a hospital in BMET training provides benefits to both with additional unique benefits for the students. The need for continuing education and training of the employed Biomedical Electronics Technician through hospital and technical societies is presented.

A survey resulted in a list of the 101 textbooks used by 62 biomedical engineering educational programs. A second list shows the text-books used by each school. A third list shows the 27 textbooks used at two or more schools and the number of times each is used. This selected compilation should be useful to (a) biomedical engineering curriculum committees considering program revision, (b) teachers considering course revision, (c) university and industrial librarians updating their collections, (d) individuals building a personal library, and (e) students desiring information about the emphasis of various educational programs.

摘要:
The ability to noninvasively monitor intracranial pressure would be a valuable aid to the diagnosis and treatment of hydrocephalus and mass lesions of the brain. An experiment is described that measures the acoustic properties of the skull, in animals, under normal and elevated intracranial pressures. Results show intracranial pressure strongly influences the acoustic response, and at least one feature of the response is related to intracranial pressure in a consistent manner.

摘要:
An emergency surgical procedure in which accidental excessive hypothermia was induced is described. Temperature drop at a rate greater than normal led to investigation which revealed improper setting of a hypo-hyperthermia machine. A simple and effective modification was made to the hypo-hyperthermia machines to reduce the likihood of the repetition of this event. Evaluation of the modified unit revealed no significant degradation of performance. Physiological effects of hypothermia are also described.
