摘要:
The Scientific and Medical Instrumentation Center (SMIC) is the clinical engineering program serving the State University of New York's Health Science Center at Brooklyn. SMIC is a separate department within the center's 354-bed University Hospital, and provides many instrumentation support services for the hospital and the center's Basic Sciences Division. Now in its 24th year, SMIC developed the nation's first mandatory initial checkout program for patient care equipment, and in 1973 published the results of a funded pilot preventive maintenance program; this served as a model for the startup of other PM programs in hospitals across the country and overseas.Today, this 35-person department is primarily responsible for some 7,000 units used in over 60 University Hospital departments and clinics. With its interdisciplinary expertise, SMIC also provides the hospital with many other instrumentation services, including prepurchase evaluation and review, and on-site emergency instrumentation service. SMIC also develops unique devices and instruments for the center's researchers, from the prototype stage through to final construction, and may modify instruments for increased safety and efficacy.

Microcomputer-based image processor boards are now available that allow a personal computer to be used as a powerful image processing system. Such systems can be used in ultrasound imaging by “grabbing,” i.e., digitizing frames of video information at the video output of the ultrasound imager. This paper describes one such system which incorporates an IBM PC, a commercially-available frame-grabber board and associated software to capture and analyze images obtained using an Acuson ultrasound system. Preliminary results obtained with this system are presented. Potential applications include image filtering, processing and enhancement, precise analysis of images including image histograms, geometric operations to expand or reduce regions of interest or to correct distortions, and comparison of digital files obtained from the same patient over time.

摘要:
An engineering design theory developed for automated surgical suturing is presented. This theory is based on the operating performance of the surgeon as well as the types of needles, suture materials, and sutures used in contemporary surgical practice. As a result, the required design variables suggested include needle penetration force, needle holding jaws, types of needles, angle of needle points, and tissue types. Also presented are the medical and technical stipulations governing the design of automatic suturing devices. Finally, since a machine that ties knots is necessarily somewhat bulky, a means of avoiding surgical knots by plastic-on-plastic welding is suggested.

An investigation of three-dimensional lumbar position and mobility has been made by combining roentgen stereophotogrammetry with reconstructed solid images of serialized CAT scans of lumbar vertebra. The three-dimensional positions of L3, L4, and L5 in a 56-year old male, unembalmed cadaver were measuredin situwith roengten stereophotogrammetry in four positions of lumbar flexion. The excised bones were cleaned and approximately 30 serialized slices in a CAT scan were obtained. These images were reconstructed using MOVIE.BYU and computer programs developed according to a protocol described in the paper. Six of nine targets in both measurement systems were located with an average difference of distance ranging from 0.4 to 1.0 mm. These computer-generated images have been used to describe local, intervertebral angular movements of .035 to .128 radians and linear movements of .00 to .12 cm as calculated by a “screw axis‘’ analysis. This investigation provides a technology that can potentially be used by both clinicians and engineers in their investgations of local spinal movements in the human body.

摘要:
A simple technique is presented that allows determination of the degree of damping and the damped resonant frequency of catheter-transducer systems. From these data, the hydraulic sinusoidal frequency response, as well as the undamped (natural) frequency can be determined. The technique consists of suddenly releasing pressure in a bubble-free, fluid-filled catheter-transducer system while recording pressure with a stripchart recorder.
