摘要:
A bicycle ergometer for exercising paralyzed muscle in man is described. This system can be used for isotonic training for both the cardiovascular system and skeletal muscle for individuals who are paralyzed. The device cannot be used on individuals who have lower motor neuron lesions. The device is based upon a standard MonarkTMbicycle ergometer. The ergometer has been modified with sensors for feedback of crank position that an Apple IITMcomputer then uses to coordinate stimulation of muscles. The muscles used in the study are theiliacusandquadriceps. Exercise training to test the device was conducted on four paraplegic and quadriplegic subjects over a period of 30 days. Exercise was induced three times per week for a period of 15 minutes. Results of these experiments show an increase in endurance and muscle size.

摘要:
An HP-85TMmicrocomputer programmed in BASICTMwas interfaced to a PEI 2000TMsafety analyzer via an HP-6942ATMMultiprogrammer and appropriate interface cards. This configuration allows automated safety and performance testing as well as report generation. The system is operated by means of a menu displayed on a built-in CRT and the keyboard. Data are displayed and then stored on the built-in cassette unit. Additional testing features are easily added with minimal software development, since all programming is in BASIC and all interface drivers are part of the hardware.

The increase in use, complexity, and cost of medical equipment requires a management response in both large and small hospitals. This paper describes the position of Clinical Equipment Coordinator (CEC) as it developed at Anaheim Memorial Hospital in Anaheim, California. The CEC can be highly effective in coordinating contract or shared services for a small hospital. In the larger hospital with an in-hospital Clinical or Biomedical Engineering Department, the CEC can take on the responsibilities of coordinating the services of the department. The authors designed an intravenous infusion system providing flow rates approximately four times greater than the fastest commercial systems. The system incorporates a number 14 French (4.5 millimeter internal diameter) catheter, introduced via the Seldinger technique, and a specially designed fluid manifold. The manifold, designed and built by the authors, allows fluid from five separate IV bags to flow to the patient through one line. Flow rates of normal saline duringin vitrotests were greater than 850 mL/min. under gravity and 2.0 L/min under pressure. Packed red blood cells (PRBC) with 90% hematocrit flowed at 800 mL/min. under pressure. PRBCs diluted to 42% hematocrit flowed at 1725 mL/min. under pressure.In vivotests with dogs demonstrated gravity and pressurized flow rate of approximately 650 mL/min. and 1600 mL/min. normal saline, respectively. No unusual sequelae of the large bore catheter were detected in the veins.

摘要:
A simple means of evaluating the various respiratory functions of intubated patients has been designed using 36 input and derived parameters. It is based on a physiologic assessment of the mechanics, oxygenation, ventilation, and perfusion parameters and allows the plotting of the static compliance and dynamic characteristic curves.

摘要:
A Siemens Elema 900B servo ventilator was modified to adjust ventilation automatically in real time. The end tidal PCO2was monitored continuously and a microcomputer system was used to adjust minute ventilation on a breath-by-breath basis. The system was tested in three dogs during HCI infusion. With the loop open (constant ventilation), end tidal PCO2increased. When the loop was closed, the microcomputer made adjustments to the delivered minute ventilation to maintain the end tidal PCO2at the preset value. This system could find applications in basic physiological research as well as in humans with further testing and evaluation.
