摘要:
Nocturnal biting rhythms of mosquitoes in a dry zone irrigated riceland habitat in Sri Lanka, were studied by analysis of hourly-segregated bovid bait catches conducted between 18:00 and 06:00 hr during February-April 1990. Peak biting immediately after sunset was seen inAedes lineatopennis(Ludlow 1905),Ae. pipersalatus(Giles 1902),Ae. vexans(Meigen 1830),Anopheles barbirostrisVan der Wulp 1884,An. vagusDoenitz 1902 andArmigeres subalbatus(Coquillett 1898). A unimodal profile with peak biting 2–4 hr after sunset occurred inMansonia uniformis(Theobald 1901),An. annularisVan der Wulp 1884,An. aconitusDoenitz 1902,An. jamesiiTheobald 1901,An. tessellatusTheobald 1901,An. nigerrimusGiles 1900,An. pallidusTheobald 1901,An. peditaeniatus(Leicester 1908) andCulex gelidusTheobald 1901. Biphasic profiles were seen inCx. fuscocephalaTheobald 1907,Cx. tritaeniorhynchusGiles 1901,Cx. pseudovishnuiColless 1957 andCx. whitmorei(Giles 1904). Among less abundant species, maximal biting occurred during the first quarter of the night inAe. indicus(Theobald 1907),Ae. pallidostrial(Theobald 1907),An. subpictusGrassi 1899 andCx. vishnuiTheobald 1901, whilst biting occurred almost uniformly throughout the night inAn. varunaIyengar 1924.

摘要:
Grasshoppers were collected in the Lake Baringo area of northern Kenya between July 1988 and March 1989. A high overall diversity, 70 species, was observed in an extensive survey. In an intensive study of a 1 km transect grasshopper diversity was strongly partitioned between habitat types (beta-diversity 17.5% of maximum possible) despite their close proximity. Densities reached 0.66 m−2, probably enough to have a significant impact on availability of grazing for stock animals.

摘要:
Extensive colour pattern variation in Namibian populations of geckos of thePachydactylus punctatuscomplex is geographically consistent and is corroborated by minor, but statistically significant, differences in scalation and body proportions. Canonical discriminant analysis and colour pattern support the recognition of two species in the complex,P. punctatusPeters 1854, distributed throughout southern Africa east of the Western Escarpment in Namibia, andP. scherziMertens 1954, restricted to western Namibia, north of the Kuiseb River. Regional colour variation occurs in each species, but current evidence does not support the formal taxonomic recognition of subspecific groupings.

摘要:
Cajachara carltoni, new genus and species, is described from a paramo located in southern Ecuador.C. carltoniis a member of a distinct aleocharine lineage within the tribe Bolitocharini. Among members of the BolitochariniC. carltoniis similar to members of the generaOphioglossaFauvel 1865 andEuderaFauvel 1865 which share the following synapomorphies: head with a distinct neck; pronotum with the anterior angles depressed; prosternum extended as broad lobe behind the procoxal insertions; broadly separated mesosternal cavities; meso- and metasternal processes broad and their apices fully or virtually in contact; mesosternum with oblique carina on each side of midline; tergum X with transverse row of flattened setae; spermatheca coiled and doubly looped; and similarities in the aedeagus.

摘要:
Daily and annual activity rhythms of a guild of burrowing beetles (Scarabaeinae) were quantified for beetles found on dung in induced pastures on the Coastal Plains of the Gulf of Mexico in the State of Veracruz, Mexico. Comparing collections from 1991–1992 with those of 1972–1973, a notable difference was observed: the presence ofDigitonthophagus gazella(Fabricius 1787). This Indoafrican species has a wide environmental tolerance, and was introduced to Texas in 1972. In the study area it has excludedOnthophagus batesiHowden & Cartwright 1963, from the pasture, which is now only found in marginal habitats.

摘要:
A reassessment was made for the status of the poorly known Vietnamese gecko,Gekko palmatusBoulenger 1907, by comparing the holotype and additional specimens of the species with those of the closely resemblingG. chinensisGray 1842 from southeastern China. As a result, it was revealed that the two species differ from each other in several characters such as the size of internasal in relation to supernasal, and snout-vent length (SVL). On the other hand, the holotype and paratype of G.similignumSmith 1923, a species described from Hainan Island but subsequently synonymised toG. chinensis, showed several characteristics such as the greater scale row count at midbody and smaller SVL when compared withG. chinensis. The types also differed fromG. palmatusin having internasal as large as or larger than supranasal. smaller SVL and fewer preanal pores. Therefore, the specific nameG. similignumwas resurrected as valid.
