摘要:
In November-December 1986 and October 1987 a comparative investigation of the invertebrate community of a number of soil types in dry savannahs was conducted in Gambela Province (= Illubabor Prov.) SW-Ethiopia during dry and rainy seasons. The dry season is characterised by a gradual decrease of biological activities with certain groups of macrofauna passing it in a resting stage (diapause egg) and some others migrating into more humid habitats. During the rainy season most groups of soil macrofauna are active with a considerable rise in population density in a number of soil types and a fall in partly submerged soils. Based on the data obtained at least two phenomological aspects in the soil population of savannahs should be considered: dry and rainy. Regular fires leave their mark on the trophic structure of the soil population: all the soils lose individuals from the saprotrophous complex (except for termites). In the dry and rainy season the relative abundance of predators and phytophages rise respectively. The trophic structure of macrofauna complexes in relation to soil humidity is described. Judging from both faunal composition and abundance of soil invertebratesw the tropical ferralitic soils seem to be potentially highly productive.

摘要:
Radiotelemetry was utilized to collect data on activity patterns movements habitat use and behavior of five (2 female 3 male) large spotted genets (Genetta maculata) captured and monitored in the Rift Valley Kenya during June-August 1987. Genets were more active at night (83%) than during the day (10%) and ranged over areas of 1.1 to 10 km (males [xbar] = 5.9 km2; females [xbar] = 2.8 km2). They traveled in a variety of habitats but grasslands were avoided. Daytime resting sites were most often in areas of dense trees shrubs or cacti and were reused by both sexes especially by a lactating female. Home ranges overlapped between sexes though foraging apparently was solitary.

摘要:
Thirty-nine genera and 80 species of xanthoid crabs are identified from recent collections in Somalia and their habitats discussed. Most are new records for Somalia and 23 were previously unknown from the East African coast. Descriptions and illustrations are given for two new species:Cymo lanatopodusandHypocolpus pardii.

摘要:
The authors report data on the site fidelity and home range in some species of birds captured and banded at the Ornithological Station of Mbour (Senegal). In addition, the orientational strategies of individuals displaced to sites 13 and 25 km from the home site were studied in two species of doves (the Laughing dove and the Black-billed Wood dove).

摘要:
Liostenogaster vechtiTurillazzi 1988, studied in Peninsular Malaysia, nests in huge aggregation of colonies, building its ring- or bracket-shaped nests on protected, smooth surfaces under overhanging rocks, bridge vaults etc. The biology and social behaviour of this species presents all the characteristics which set the Stenogastrinae aside from the other social vespids, i.e. production of an abdominal substance to help rear the immature brood, a three phase egg deposition, the presence of only four larval instars and the establishment of invariably small sized colonies. Colony life revolves round a dominant female, which has developed ovaries and spends most of her time on the nest. Colonies belonging to clusters from two separate localities showed a different percentages of potential egg layers per nest. In one cluster in particular, most of the colonies had only one egg layer, in spite of the differences in female population size. LikeL. flavolineata(Cameron 1902), the colonial size ofL. vecthiseems to be limited by intermittent food supply and the slow rate of egg deposition, but a third limiting factor is probably the high predation by hornets.

摘要:
A new genus (Xeroniscus) and three new species of terrestrial Isopoda (X. nogalensisandX. penicilligerfrom northern Somalia, andX. angusticaudafrom the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen) are described. Three species previously ascribed toPeriscyphisare transferred toXeroniscus(X. brevicaudatusfrom southern Somalia,X. erythraeusfrom Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia, andX. bicoloratusfrom the Yemen Arab Republic). The position of the new genus in the family Eubelidae is discussed.
