摘要:
During three cruises of the former Soviet research vessels R/V “Akademik Petrovsky” (Cruise AP-14) and R/V “Odissey” (Cruises 0–33, 0–34) to the Western Indian Ocean, 120 species of the superfamilies Portunoidea and Xanthoidea were collected. Species of the following families are identified in the present study: Portunidae (37 species), Xanthidae (64 species), Trapeziidae (12 species), Carpiliidae (1 species), Menippidae (4 species), and Xanthoidea incertae sedis (2 species). The geographical range of 17 portunid and xanthoid species is substantially extended, one species,Charybdis hawaiensisEdmondson 1954 was previously known only from the Pacific and is recorded for the first time from the Indian Ocean. The recent synonymy and updated distribution records are given for all species examined, and zoogeography as well as habitat selection of the more common species are discussed.

摘要:
We estimated the mule deerOdocoileus hemionus peninsulae(Lydekker 1898) population in six locations of an oak-pine forest in the Sierra de La Laguna in the Cape Region of Baja California Sur, Mexico, during 7 consecutive years (1987 to 1993). The most important habitat variables for deer (plant biomass, cover, and water) were measured over five wet and dry seasons at the same locations. The population estimation (based on pellet-group counts) resulted in an average density of 19 ± 5 deer/km2. The deer habitat in the area is typified by different association proportions of Black OakQuercus devia-Pinyon PinePinus lagunae-OakQuercus tuberculata-MadroneArbutus peninsularis.

摘要:
Seasonal changes in the weight, diameter, length and histological details of the oviduct were studied in adultRana cyanophlyctisduring the annual reproductive cycle. There are a pair of oviducts in this frog and each one was externally divisible into three segments, i.e., pars recta, pars convoluta and pars uterus. Histologically, the oviduct was composed of outer serosa/peritonial epithelium, middle connective tissue layer (which was very much reduced in thickness) and inner luminal epithelial lining. In the pars recta region, the inner epithelial cells formed longitudinal folds while, in the pars convoluta and pars uterus segments, the epithelial cells differentiated into gland cells and ciliated cells. There was a seasonal variation in the weight, length, diameter of different segments of the oviduct and in the height of the inner epithelial cell lining during the annual cycle. All these parameters were minimum in January (late post-breeding regression phase of reproductive cycle), increased up to September (breeding phase) and then declined following spawning activity. The results suggest that inR. cyanophlyctis, the oviduct undergoes annual variation both in morphology and histological details that depict the functional status of the organ.

摘要:
A new species ofLycodon, L. ferroni, from Samar Island, central-eastern Philippines, is described. This species is most similar toL. dumerili, from which it differs in having: 10 supralabials (IV-VI entering eye) instead of 9 (IV-V); dorsals reducing to 15 at the level of ventral 119 instead of at ventrals 131–145; body and tail with dark annuii instead of dark cross-bands.Lycodoncontains about 25 species, 8 of which are endemic to the Philippines:alcalai(Batan Island, Batan Group),bibonius(Camiguin Island, Babuyan Group),chrysoprateros(Dalupiri Island, Babuyan Group),dumerili(Basilan, Mindanao),ferroni(Samar),muelleri(Batan, Luzon, Mindoro, Polillo),solivagus(Luzon), andtessellatus(Luzon); the 2 non-endemic species,L. subcinctus(SE Asia) and especiallyL. aulicus(S Asia), seem to be anthropophilous and likely to have reached the Philippines through human agency. An extensive review strongly suggests thatL. striatus nordicusDeranivagala 1955 is a synonym ofL. striatus bicolor(Nikolsky 1903) (new svnonvmv).

摘要:
The bees of the genusAnthophoraLatreille 1803 of the West Indies are revised for the first time. Four species previously known from the Lesser and Greater Antilles are redescribed, one from the Bahamas has already been adequately described and two species, one from Haiti and one from St Eustatius, are herein described as new. The respective species areAnthophora atrataCresson 1865,A. footeiCrawford 1914,A. hilarisSmith 1879,A. tricolor(Fabricius 1775),A. bahamensisBrooks 1988,A. hispaniolan. sp. andA. eustatiensisn. sp. All known distributional, floral and biological data are given, as well as a key to species.

摘要:
A systematic review of the aleocharine genusAmazonoporaPace 1996 is presented.Amazonoporais redescribed, and three species are recognized, two of which are described as new (A.leschenin. sp., type locality: Peru, Campamento San Jacinto, 2°18.75′S, 75°51.77′W; andA. brooksin. sp., type locality: French Guiana, Roura, 39.4 km SSE, 270 m 4°32′43″N, 52°8′26″W). Types and paratypes of the two new species are designated. A key is provided for separation of known species ofAmazonoporaand illustrations of diagnostic features are provided.Amazonoporais hypothesized to be a member of the tribe Myllaenini based on the very small gland opening on the anterior margin of tergite VII; antero-lateral angles of mentum prolonged into spinose processes; lacinia of maxilla elongate, slender, with distinctive distribution of spines interdigitating with spinose scales; galea shorter and much more slender than lacinia, with distinctive small patch of setae on apex, and without setae on mesal edge; cardo of maxilla very elongate; medial pseudopore field narrow, without pseudopores; lateral pseudopore fields of prementum without pseudopores; and, labial palpi elongate and stylate.

摘要:
Two species of Tubificidae (both subfamily Rhyacodrilinae) are described from a hypersaline, high intertidal mangrove site at Gazi Bay in southern Kenya indicating that mangrove sediments of tropical East Africa contain marine Tubificidae, as do similar habitats studied on other continents. One species is identified asAinudrilus mediocrisErséus 1997, originally described from similar habitats in northern Australia. The genitalia of the Kenyan specimens differ in some dimensional features from those of the Australian material. The second taxon,Monopylephorus parvusDitlevsen 1904, is reported from many parts of the world, from tropical as well as temperate regions; it possibly should be regarded as a group of (very similar) species rather than a single species.

摘要:
In the course of recent field surveys, specimens of the lizardZonosaurus brygooiLang & Böhme 1990 were collected at two localities in northeastern Madagascar (Besariaka and Tsararano rainforests), which are situated about 50–70 km north of Nosy Mangabe, the northernmost population so far reliably known. The species was not found at Anjanaharibe and Marojejy massifs, nor in the corridor which connects these areas. One specimen collected at Andohahela in the South-East, about 750 km south of Betampona, the southernmost population so far known, is provisionally referred to Z.brygooi.It differs, however, by the presence of four supralabials anterior to the subocular, a character that may indicate its taxonomic distinctness. Together with two new locality records of Z.aeneus(Grandidier 1872), the new material enables us to discuss the distribution and zoogeography of the Z.aeneusgroup (Z.aeneus, Z. brygooi, Z. rufipesand Z.subunicolor), and to describe the genital morphology of Z.brygooifor the first time. Our data indicate a possible seasonal variation in the hemipenis ornamentation of the species.

摘要:
The cicada genusNyaran. gen. and its sole speciesN. thanatotican. sp. are described and diagnosed. This species is very peculiar because it often feigns death when disturbed. This is the first time such behaviour has been described in a cicada.Nyarais the third endemic cicada genus described from a South African forest. Its distribution along the subtropical Eastern Cape coast, which is threatened by strip mining and housing developments, highlights the need for conservation of these under-researched habitats.
