The chromosomes of two species of subterranean insectivores belonging to the African endemic family Chrysochloridae were investigated, namelyAmblysomus hottentotus(A. Smith 1829) andA. irisThomas & Schwann 1905. The diploid numbers are 2n= 32 and2n= 34 respectively. The C- and NOR-band patterns were also investigated. The relation between fossoriality and chromosome evolution was also discussed.

A new genas and species,Balebreviceps hillmani, is described from a forested locality high in the mountains of Ethiopia, where it is isolated, both geographically and ecologically, from related forms in eastern and southern Africa. The new taxon seems most closely allied toProbrevicepsParker 1931, but exhibits a number of morphological characteristics which appear somewhat intermediate between those ofProbrevicepsand the more specialised genusBrevicepsMerrem 1820. It is distinguished from all other brevicipitine microhylids by the presence of posteriorly curved clavicles; the complete absence of middle ear elements; the structure of the palate; the unique position of the outer toe, which is perhaps related to the elongation of the proximal epiphysis of the corresponding metatarsal; and by a striking aposematic colour pattern. There is circumstantial evidence thatBalebrevicepsresemblesProbrevicepsandBrevicepsin having a terrestrial life cycle, but that fossorial tendencies are perhaps not strongly developed inB. hillmani.

A fourth specimen ofHarpesaurus beccariiDoria 1888 to become known after about 80 years is described and compared with the available literature data. The first information on colouration in life is documented, and first behavioural data (feeding and drinking behaviour, escape tactics) are given. It is suggested that the conspicuous rostral appendage in this species and in related forms has social significance for species recognition which lowers its systematic value.

The five species of the genusPenichrolucanusDeyrolle 1863 (Coleoptera Lucanidae) were re-examined and their aedeagi studied and a dichotomous key provided for their identification. The genus is removed from the subfamily Penichrolucaninae and placed in the subfamily Lucaninae. Specimens ofP. copricephalusDeyrolle 1863 andP. elongatusArrow 1935 were collected in Malaysia in termite nests ofHospitalitermessp. propemedioflavus(Holmgren 1913).

New species of Discolomidae (Coleoptera) from the Himalayas (Pakistan: Swat and Hazara; India: Uttar Pradesh, Darjeeling, Assam; Nepal) are described:Parmachema loeblin. sp.,Aphanocephalus assamemisn. sp.,Aphanocephalus besuchetin. sp.,Aphanocephalus ganganicusn. sp.,Aphanocephalus himalayanusn. sp. InAphanocephalusWollaston 1873 diagnostic characters for specific identification are found only in the male aedoeagus: the external features of different species from the same locality can be identical. InAphanocephalus himalayanusn. sp. a sexually dimorphic head is described for the first time in this family. New collecting sites forParafallia johniGeisthardt 1975 are reported and its aedoeagus is illustrated. All the Himalayan records are summarized in maps. Some additional remarks on the zoogeography, the microstructures of the cuticula and aedoeagi, the vertical distribution and biology are given.

A map and comments on the distribution of all the species ofArmadilloniscusare included, together with a cladistic analysis of the probable phylogenetic relationships between the species.
