摘要:
The tubular stomach of the omnivorous cyprinodont,Aphanius dispar(Rüppell 1828) is composed of four layers, mucosa, submucosa, muscularis and serosa. In the transitional area between the oesophagus and stomach of specimens kept in freshwater, the stratified epithelium is replaced by a monolayer of cuboidal epithelium and columnar epithelium with goblet cells. There are numerous goblet cells in the apical mucosa of normally fed fish. When starved, the goblet cells became more rounded and their numbers reduced considerably; the negative relationship between the duration of starvation and the number of goblet cells was significant (P < 0.001). The stomach histology ofA. disparand its response to starvation are discussed.

摘要:
The Afrotropical species ofMeloeLinnaeus 1758 are assigned to three subgenera, the nominate subgenus,EurymeloeReitter 1911 andAfromeloeSchmidt 1913. The former is primarily Holarctic with minor representation in southern and eastern Africa;Eurymeloeis almost entirely Palaearctic and represented by only one species in the desert area of Dijbouti.Afromeloeis restricted to Yemen, Sokotra Island, eastern and southern Africa and Madagascar. It is closest to the Palaearctic subgeneraTaphromeloeReitter 1911 andMeloegoniusReitter 1911. This study reviews all AfrotropicalMeloewith an emphasis onAfromeloe. It includes a description of the first instar larva of three species, a key to adults, and an annotated species catalogue with pertinent synonymy, distribution and ecological records, and brief taxonomic commentary. The description of the first instar ofMeloe cafferPéringuey 1886 represents the first larval description ofAfromeloe. The triungulins of two southern African species of the subgenusMeloealso are described.

摘要:
Within the paleotropical tree genusMacaranga(Thouars 1806) (Euphorbiaceae), the majority of ant-plant species are associated with specializedCrematogaster(Lund 1831) partner ants from the subgenusDecacrema(Myrmicinae). We have now discovered a completely different myrmecophytic system in which an ant species of the Formicinae lives in symbiosis with the peat swamp forest treeMacaranga puncticulata(Gage 1922).M. puncticulatatwigs develop spacious cavities (domatia). An undescribedCamponotus (Colobopsis)(Mayr 1861) species of the C.saundersi-group was the dominant ant inhabitant (65% of the investigated plants) at forest sites, but this species, provisionally named C.(Colobopsis)sp. 1, was only rarely found at open stands. Another 29 opportunistic stem-nesting ant species were collected less frequently. None of them wereCrematogaster (Decacrema)ants.C. (Colobopsis)sp. 1 has never been found to nest away fromM. puncticulata. The mated queens are capable of locating youngM. puncticulataplants and of chewing entrance holes into the domatia. In contrast to all the other obligate plant-ants associated withMacaranga, C.(Colobopsis)sp. 1 never cultivates any trophobionts, neither inside nor outside the domatia. Instead of taking up honey dew from coccids, the ants obtain carbohydrates from extrafloral nectaries along the leaf margins ofM. puncticulata. This food source is an uncommon trait withinMacarangamyrmecophytes. The association of C.(Colobopsis)sp. 1 withM. puncticulatais therefore the first record of a two-partner ant-plant system without endophytic coccids in the genusMacaranga.

摘要:
An overview is given of the odontopygid milliped genusPatinatiusAttems 1928, restricted to Africa. Fourteen species are now known, includingP. transkeicusa new species discovered at Transkei (South-Africa). The taxonomy of the genus is discussed and a key to the males provided. Besides this, an overview is added of telocoxite morphology. A preliminary effort is made to look for relationships betweenPatinatiusspecies by comparing their distribution pattern with gonopod morphology, in particular the number of thorns or apophyses on gonopod telocoxites. Species without or with one, poorly developed apophysis are concentrated in the northern and southern parts of the distribution range ofPatinatius, whereas species with one or two well developed apophyses all occur close to each other in the central area (exceptbovinusKraus 1966). Radiation seems to have taken place intensively in the Natal area, with many species occurring within a small area.

摘要:
The genusMegarthrusCurtis 1829 is represented in New Guinea, New Caledonia and Fiji by 10 species, eight of which are described as new:M. alienus, M. anggiensis, M. baliemensis, M. fijianus, M. gressitti, M. kuscheli, M. peckorumandM. riedeli.A key to the species is provided, their diagnostic characters are illustrated, and the data available on natural history and ecology are presented. Based on a phylogenetic analysis two monophyletic species groups are recognised: one is endemic to New Guinea(auricola-group), the second to New Caledonia and Fiji(alienus-group). Thealienus-group is likely Oriental in origin, while theauricola-group may be derived from a circumtropical lineage containing Neotropical and AfrotropicalMegarthrus.

摘要:
The hypothesis thatPitunaCosta 1989 is a member of the tribe Plesiolebiatini is supported by the presence of a concave anterior border of the rostral cartilage, non-overlapping autopalatine and entopterygoid, a concave anteromesial border of the first epibranchial, and an elongate basihyal. Its sister group relationship with the clade comprising the generaMaratecoaraCosta 1995,PlesiolebiasCosta 1989 andStenolebiasCosta 1995 is corroborated by the presence of plesiomorphic features for character states defining that clade: a distinct sharp ventral process on autopalatine, a short posterior process of the quadrate, and a wide distal basihyal.Pitunais diagnosed by a posteriorly placed dorsal fin, unique anal-fin colour pattern in males, a metallic blue humeral blotch in males, and scattered black spots over pectoral fins in males.Pituna porangaCosta 1989 is considered to be a synonym ofP. compacta(Myers 1927), which occurs in a vast central Brazilian region, in temporary pools of the Araguaia and Tocantins river basins.

摘要:
In a collection of hermit crabs from supralittoral, intertidal, and subtidal areas of the Maldive archipelago (latitudes 7°0′N and 0°4′S, longitudes 72°30′ and 73°40′E), 27 species were found, belonging to the generaCoenobitaLatreille 1829 (family Coenobitidae),CalcinusDana 1851,CiliopagurusForest 1995,ClibanariusDana 1852,DardanusPaul'son 1875,DiogenesDana 1851,PaguristesDana 1851 (family Diogenidae), andCatapagurusA. Milne Edwards 1880,MicropagurusMcLaughlin 1986,PagurixusMelin 1939,PylopaguropsisAlcock 1905, andTrichopagurusde Saint Laurent 1970 (family Paguridae). This hermit fauna was in part composed of species widely distributed within the Western Indian Ocean (12 species); seven species were previously known from a few localities, seven were recorded for the first time in the Western Indian Ocean, that isCalcinus guamensisWooster 1984, C.pulcherForest 1958,Calcinussp.,Clibanarius boschmaiBuitendijk 1937, C.corallinus(H. Milne Edwards 1848),Micropagurus polynesiensis(Nobili 1907), andTrichopagurus trichoph-thalmus(Forest 1954). A new species,Catapagurus alcocki, is described and illustrated by one of the authors. The species composition from this archipelago is discussed and compared with lists previously compiled for other areas of the Western Indian Ocean. As shown by a clustering technique, the Maldives hermit crab fauna has a closer affinity with the cluster composed by the Mascarenes, Seychelles, Madagascar, Somalia, Kenya, South Africa, Mozambique, and Tanzania, than the geographically closer Western India and Sri Lanka.
