摘要:
The ability to recognize elements of the environment as familiar objects, events, or classes underlies virtually all human cognition. Positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies of the recognition of visually presented objects suggest that several brain areas crucially support this function. However, a review of these findings reveals great variability in the cortical localization of object recognition in humans. Although there is converging evidence for the importance of the temporal and occipitotemporal cortex in object recognition, a consistent picture of the functional organization within these areas and their relation to function in other cortical regions has not yet emerged from brain imaging studies.

摘要:
Studies using functional imaging tools and in-vivo stimulation have contributed to more precise anatomical localization of the brain areas that are active in specific saccade eye movement tasks in intact human beings. They provide a unique perspective on in-vivo brain function and complement studies in patients with known cerebral lesions and abnormal eye movements.

摘要:
This review primarily concerns two issues. First, in myasthenia gravis, what mechanisms are likely to underlie the low threshold for extraocular muscle involvement in this disease? Second, what is the likely importance of anti-GQ1b ganglioside antibodies in the diagnosis and causation of Miller-Fisher syndrome?

摘要:
The diagnosis and management of diseases of the orbit, optic nerve and chiasm continue to evolve. Advances in neuroradiology are remarkable and continue to expand diagnosis and management. This review will highlight the clinical assessment of disease, orbital and neuroimaging, medical and surgical management.

摘要:
The short arm of chromosome 17 has emerged as a hot spot where several phenotypically distinct retinal disorders have been mapped in the past year. An autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa, Leber's congenital amaurosis, autosomal dominant cone degeneration, central areolar choroidal dystrophy and Sjogren-Larsson syndrome were all recently mapped to chromosome 17p. These disorders, their genetic linkage, possible candidate genes and the possibility that several of these disorders may share candidate genes are discussed.

摘要:
This review follows closely on the publication of significant handbooks and symposia concerned with neuro-otology, pharmacology of emesis, imaging, cochlear prostheses and aspects of vertigo which reflect the considerable advances that have been made in clinical and basic neuroscience in these areas in recent years. The value of the cochlear prosthesis has been demonstrated convincingly and may well be a model for the future of brain implantations in diverse disorders of the central nervous system. Imaging of the inner ear has made spectacular advances to provide invaluable aids to diagnosis. Neuro-otologists are becoming aware of the diversity of diseases, particularly those related to hormonal regulation, which may cause or exacerbate symptoms in patients with vertigo. Fortunately for the sufferer, a clearly focussed view is emerging of the pharmacology of overlapping and interrelated problems of emesis, vertigo and migraine which promises an early solution to their integrated management.

摘要:
There have been significant advances in our understanding of the contribution of mitochondria to basic cellular function such as energy supply, calcium homeostasis and, more recently, programmed cell death. Mitochondria now appear to play an important role in the final common pathway leading to apoptosis. Study of inborn errors of the respiratory chain is now focussed on understanding pathogenesis, in particular the role of the cell nucleus in determining the expression of mitochondrial DMA mutations. Respiratory chain deficiencies induced by exogenous or endogenous toxins are important in the aetiology and pathogenesis of certain neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease. A potential role for inborn mitochondrial defects in these disorders has not yet been defined but is currently attracting interest.
