摘要:
A series of corrosion experiments was carried out using identical samples of a ceramic of known composition, structure and density which were subjected to a variety of simulated soil solutions. The action of the solutions was monitored by measuring their pH as a function of time at 25 °C and 90 °C. Under all conditions the pH stabilized rapidly. Microscopic and electron microscopic studies showed the presence of reaction/alteration products that would account for the observed pH changes. The findings indicate that ancient ceramics that exhibit no physical deterioration will have below their surface a composition corresponding to the composition of the sherd at the time of its buria

摘要:
The uses made of analyses of copper alloys from West Africa are critically discussed in relation to the techniques by which metal was produced in contemporary Europe and Islamic lands. The conclusions of this study are that it is likely to be very difficult to provenance the metal source, or date the artifact by composition except in the rare case of high zinc brasses. Some analyses of European copper alloys, manillas and further samples from Igbu‐Ukwu are give

摘要:
The carbon‐13 NMR spectra of amber from several mining sites in the Dominican Republic show considerable variation. In certain cases the differences are sufficiently distinct to serve as a reliable indicator of provenance. The gradations within the resonances of unsaturated carbons may reflect the relative ages of the samples, because fossilization and diagenesis can remove this functionalit

摘要:
Some examples of Longquan greenware have been analysed by neutron activation analysis. Most sherds are from kiln excavations in Zhejiang province, and date from the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties. The elements Ce, Yb, Hf and Ta are shown to be consistently high and suggest that a common clay was used over a long period. The iron content of the glaze is shown to decrease from the Song to the Ming dynasty, implying an improvement in the refiring of the glaze raw materials.

摘要:
Americium‐241 source was used to investigate elements whose fluorescent X‐ray energies are between about 25 and 40 keV. We did not find any correlation between the amount of the elements present and the time of manufacture except for barium, which can therefore be used to detect modern reproductions. This method of detection is both quick and non‐destru

摘要:
‘Textural analysis’ is being increasingly used for the characterisation of pottery fabrics. In this study we have investigated some of the effects on the observed size distribution data of applying a number of different grain selection procedures (principally various point‐counting and ribbon‐counting procedures). The results indicate that significant differences may arise from the application of the various techniques of grain selection and it is important that appropriate procedures be rigorously

摘要:
Three types of Iberian pottery from the same excavation and archaeological level have been studied by Moessbauer spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and transmitted‐light polarizing microscopy. The results are compatible with a common origin, a firing temperature below 850 °C, and a different fabrication technique for each pottery

摘要:
Excavations at the Celtic settlement of Sopron‐Krautacker (W. Hungary) make it possible to form an overall view on the local practice of pottery manufacture. Study of the soil conditions has established that the source of raw material is the nearly calcium carbonate‐free upper layer of the local soil resulting from a leaching process. By the various analytical methods used (XRD, XRF spectroscopy, and thermal analysis) composition of the pottery has been determined, and it has been shown that the vessels were fired at 600–7

摘要:
Titanium and calcium in ceramic materials can be analysed by neutron activation using a number of radioisotopes. Historical usage of scandium‐47 for the analysis ofbothelements is reviewed. Measurements were made of the production and decay of47Sc sources prepared by SLOWPOKE reactor irradiations of pure titanium and calcium salts. Relative interferences were established and their effects calculated for a range of ceramic types. This study indicates that published values of the concentrations of titanium and calcium, using47Sc, must be seriously reassesse
