摘要:
The authors report their experience with using a microcomputer to collaborate in writing the visitor's report while performing an accreditation site visit for the National League for Nursing (NLN). They describe the arrangements required for using the computer, identify some advantages and disadvantages, and speculate on the future possibilities. Their observations are of practical interest, and their report also has historic value. This was the first time the microcomputer was used in making a site visit by NLN visitors.

摘要:
This article describes the development of an expert system prototype to aid nursing diagnosis. The system is called CANDI, which stands for Computer-Aided Nursing Diagnosis and Intervention. Expert systems in nursing and medicine and selected decision-making models in nursing are reviewed and an overview of software and hardware used in the system is presented. At the time of this report, the development of the natural language user interface and an automated system for collecting patient data have been completed. The approach to the development of the knowledge base and inference engine are also discussed. By sharing this work, the authors' goal is to stimulate others to apply computer technology to nursing, to enhance the quality of nursing care, and to increase the efficiency by which selected nursing functions can be accomplished.

摘要:
All 441 National League for Nursing (NLN)-accredited baccalaureate nursing programs in the US were surveyed by mail in March/April 1986 to determine the level of computer assisted instruction (CAI) use. Of the 339 (76.9%) who responded, 164 (48.4%) indicated CAI use. Fifty-six (16.5%) respondents identified CAI use in courses required prior to nursing courses, and 151 (44.5%) respondents indicated its use in nursing courses. One hundred forty-five respondents identified the program level for nursing CAI use. CAI was found at all program levels. Commercial CAI packages were used by 143 (91.7%) of the 156 respondents who indicated its origin, and locally developed CAI was used by 61 (39.1%) respondents. Simulations were heavily used. Problem solving was the instructional method identified most frequently. Of the 200 respondents who indicated their future plans, 110 (55%) described plans to implement CAI soon. Inadequate funding was the major reason for nonuse of CAI.

摘要:
Patients are confronted with a variety of educational materials in health care settings. Nurses are often the primary distributors of written instructional and informational pamphlets and booklets. One problem identified has been a disparity between the reading levels of materials and the reading levels of a target population. Some health care providers attempt to calculate the readability of printed materials using mathematical formulas that consider such factors as the number of syllables, the number of sentences, or the length of sentences. This task is tedious, time-consuming, and may yield unreliable results based on human error. This article describes the use of a software package that calculates seven readability formulas and highlights the benefits obtained when it was used in a health care setting. Implementation of this approach supports the nursing management philosophy of providing patients with written materials that are understandable and contribute to well-informed health decisions.

摘要:
This article describes a plan for systematically implementing computer usage throughout the total baccalaureate nursing curriculum. The students begin by learning word processing. After this, development of database files and selection of information from files is presented as a method for developing care plans. Simulations, drill-and-practice exercises, and tutorials are incorporated at various points in the curriculum. In the leadership area, students develop spreadsheets and learn management skills using the computer. Examples of nursing applications of computer functions are described. In addition, the actions of various levels of students to learning the use of computers are presented.
