Abstract and SummaryPartial ethograms have been compiled for specific studies in numerous species, but so far no generally accepted format has emerged which allows for standardized coding and for quantitative taxonomic comparisons. After a review of the literature (which is not included in this paper) we have designed a format for the coding and presentation of visual behavior patterns, and tested and refined it in a study of the bluebreasted quail's ethogram. We present here the description of the 60 most commonly observed visually discernible behavior patterns, coded by the state of 17 different feature variables, where each state variable can assume one of only two or three different states, and orientation variables are set in reference to a 26‐sided solid. In addition, each behavior pattern is illustrated by a schematic sketch of the bird in a characteristic climax pose.The goal of this paper is to draw attention to the urgent need for some standardization of the reporting of behavioral observation if we take the “comparative approach to the study of behavior” seriously. This ethogram may serve as a focal point in the future discussion, and potentially as a prototype for a generally usable standard for behavioral coding systems in birds, or for the members of other taxa.“Every organism has certain characteristic ways of acting, which are conditioned largely by its bodily structure, and which limit its action under all sorts of conditions … It is usually possible to determine with some approach to completeness the various movements which a given organism has at command. Bis jetzt fehlt ein allgemein annehmbares Format, das eine standardisierte Kodierung und spätere quantitative taxonomische Vergleiche erlaubt. Nachdem wir die einschlägigen Veröffentlichungen kritisch untersucht hatten (das Referat ist nicht in dieser Arbeit enthalten), haben wir ein Format für die Kodierung und Beschreibung visueller Verhaltensmuster entworfen und es am Ethogramm der Zwergwachtel erprobt und verfeinert. Wir legen hier eine Beschreibung der 60 häufigsten visuellen Verhaltensmuster vor, kodiert durch den Zustand von 17 verschiedenen Merkmalsvariablen, wobei jede Variable jeweils einen von nur zwei oder drei verschiedenen Zuständen annehmen kann und Orientierungs‐Zustands‐Variable in bezug auf die Achsen eines 26seitigen Körpers kodiert sind. Zusätzlich wurde jedes Verhaltensmuster in einer Zeichnung des Vogels in der charakteristischen Körperstellung dargestellt.Ziel dieser Arbeit ist, auf die dringliche Notwendigkeit hinzuweisen, eine allgemeine Standardisierung für die Beschreibung von Verhalten einzuführen, wenn die Idee einer “Vergleichenden Verhaltensforschung” nicht zur leeren Phrase werden soll. Abstract and SummaryOn the Ethology of the Male Solitary Bee (Panurgus banksianusKirby) Field Observations and ExperimentsIn the solitary bee,Panurgus banksianus, black in both sexes, the mating behaviour of the male was observed during 10 seasons and the releasing stimuli were analysed. Site tenacity was tested with marked males: they return to the colony at most for 14 days. The host flowers of the female are yellow composites; yellow flowers are also chosen by the males for patrolling, foraging and resting. The males mate in the nest area more frequently with females carrying bright yellow pollen loads than with females showing no contrast. We found out for the first time that mating also occurred on the host plant which proved to be important. Part of the males (perhaps the older ones) do not patrol but occupy a yellow flower for several days. Patrolling males pounce on them and seem to try to mate with them during a quick grappling. The owner wards them off. Injuries were never observed. When males are ready to mate in the colony they often creep into a nest entrance. They react in the same way to artificial holes.Although males cannot be trained like honey‐bees, the method used by K. von Frisch, a coloured paper square amidst an array of grey squares arranged like a chess‐board, proved a good way for our analysis. Males sit more on the yellow square than on the grey ones. Yellow is still much more attractive when a black model is placed on it. The male pounces in about 100 % of the cases, whereas the black models on the grey squares are hardly reacted to. Black on yellow triggers a sexual releasing mechanism which explains why the female on her host flower is flown at by the male (key stimulus) as well as are males on their yellow flower perches. The black model, after reducing the yellow ground to two small borders of a few mm, is still significantly preferred to a normal black model (female with two pollen loads against a female without). Black models larger than the males, on yellow ground, are preferred to models of normal size (mating pairs are often pounced at by several males). The question whether the male can see yellow as a colour or only as a shade of brightness could only be settled by laboratory tests. However, colour vision can be inferred from the wholesale acceptance of three yellow squares of different brightness. Ultraviolet, that the honey‐bee sees as a colour, may be absent in the yellow squares offered without reducing their attractiveness.ZusammenfassungBei der solitären, in beiden Geschlechtern schwarzen Trugbiene,Panurgus banksianus, wurden in 10 Flugzeiten das Fortpflanzungsverhalten des Männchens beobachtet und die auslösenden Reize untersucht. Markierte Männchen kommen höchstens 14 Tage in die Kolonie zurück. Das Weibchen sammelt in gelben Kompositen, das Männchen umschwärmt gelbe Blüten, leckt Nektar und ruht in solchen. Es paart sich vor allem mit Weibchen, deren dunkler Leib sich von Gelb abhebt. Ein Teil der Männchen (vielleicht die älteren) sitzen tagelang auf den gleichen Blumen, wo sie viel von schwärmenden Männchen angetippt werden, die eine Paarung zu versuchen scheinen; sie werden stark abgewehrt, doch gibt es nie Verletzungen. Paarungsbereite Männchen kriechen auch in künstliche Löcher wie in die Nesteingänge ein.Obwohl man die Männchen nicht wie die Honigbiene dressieren kann, hat sich die von K. von Frisch (1965) angewandte Methode mit einer in Schachbrettform angeordneten Helligkeitsskala und einem Farbfeld bewährt. Noch viel anziehender als Gelb allein (für Schwärmen und Sitzen) ist eine auf gelbem Grund liegende schwarze Attrappe, die fast 100%ig Antippen auslöst, während die gleiche Attrappe auf grauen Feldern kaum angeflogen wird. Dieser sexuelle Auslösereiz ist auch bei starker Verkleinerung des Grundes noch wirksam (gelbe “Pollenhöschen” des Weibchens!). Größere Attrappen werden vor kleineren bevorzugt (Anfliegen kopulierender Paare durch weitere Männchen!). Es ist nicht selbstverständlich, daß das Männchen Gelb als Farbe und nicht nur als Helligkeit wahrnimmt. Abstract and SummaryThe significance of a one‐male troop organization in determining the reproductive success of adult male guenons is called into question by the observations reported here. A previously habituated blue monkey (Cercopithecus mitis stuhlmanni) troop was observed for 6 months during which time 16 adult males associated with the troop and 9 were seen to copulate with about 6 of its 18 adult females which became receptive during the observations. For two years before the study there was only one adult male in the troop and the same male was again the only one present for several months afterwards. During the study this male ranked above all the others in terms of agonistic interactions, and copulated least frequently. The simple dichotomy between harem male and solitary male could not be applied in this population, and adult males were seen to maintain varied social relationships with each other and with the females of several adjacent troops.ZusammenfassungUnsere Beobachtungen werfen Zweifel auf die Bedeutung der “Ein‐Männchen‐Gruppe” für den Fortpflanzungserfolg männlicher Meerkatzen. Abstract and SummarySome displays occur in recognizably similar and equivalent forms on different parts of the bodies of different species of coleoid cephalopods. They have been physically transposed, but they are still homologous or involved in homologous relations. Among these patterns are two or more sets of stripes, false (Dymantic) eye spots, and certain phenomena which simulate horns. The transposed signals can be intraspecific and/or interspecific. The existence of such transpositions would suggest that the detectable components of ritualized signal systems are differentially susceptible to change over evolutionary time. Some underlying releasing mechanisms appear to have been more conservative than their releasers. The point can also be made in reverse. Some releasers appear to have changed positions while continuing to activate the same or very similar releasing mechanisms. Correlations among the components of systems must be essential. They are not always equal or one‐to‐one.ResumenEn partes diferentes del cuerpo de diversas especies de cefalópodos coleoideos se observan despliegues similares o evidentemente equivalentes en sus formas. Abstract and SummaryMales ofUperoleia rugosacalled mainly at night in aggregations of regularly distributed males. The advertisement calls had a uniform sound pressure field and their attenuation closely followed the inverse square law, but excess attenuation by absorption and reflection in vegetation also occurred. There was little variation in the sound intensity of an individual's calls, but there was much variation of call intensity between males. Sound intensity did not correlate with body size or with ambient temperature. The playback of advertisement calls to territorial males showed three distinct behavioural thresholds that were evoked by particular sound intensities. The responses and thresholds were: 1) antiphonal calling at 76 dB; 2) encounter (territorial) calls at 84 dB; and 3) fight or flight at 91 dB. These thresholds are represented in a graphical model of male spacing. Encounter calls evoked the same behavioural responses but at much lower sound intensities (58, 67 and 68 dB respectively). The minimum territory depended on behavioural threshold (2), and in a homogeneous habitat was roughly circular with a radius equivalent to 84 dB. The area of the territory depended on the intensity of the resident's calls and on the density of vegetation at the calling site. For example, the minimum territory of a male in dense vegetation had a radius of 0.38 m while a male calling in the open had a territory radius of 0.72 m. The shape of the territory was influenced by the distribution of vegetation at the calling site. A nearest‐neighbour analysis of a chorus of calling males yielded a mean territory radius of 0.68 m in vegetation and 1.28 m in the open.ZusammenfassungMännchen des FroschesUperoleia rugosarufen besonders nachts aus Ansammlungen, in denen sie gleichmäßig verteilt sind. Verhaltensschwellenwert ab. In einem homogenen Habitat war es etwa kreisrund mit einem 84 dB entsprechenden Radius. Abstract and SummaryThe time and energy costs of play behaviour were assessed empirically for 10‐ to 12‐week‐old kittens (Felis catus), using a variety of methods. Play was found, on average, to occupy 9% of total time. The net daily energy expenditure (in excess of resting metabolism) due to play was found to account for approximately 4% (and at most 9%) of total daily energy expenditure, excluding growth. These results cast some doubt on the assertion, commonly found in the behavioural literature, that play is very “costly” and must, therefore, have important beneficial effects. An alternative suggestion is that play may have only minor benefits, which nonetheless outweigh its minor costs.ZusammenfassungMit verschiedenen Methoden wurden Zeit‐ und Energieverbrauch des Spielverhaltens von 10‐ bis 12wöchigen Kätzchen (Felis catus) bestimmt. Abstract and SummaryRedtail monkeys have been described as living in groups with a single “harem” ♂. Observations of a group of redtails including one breeding season suggest that the social structure of this species is variable both in time and space. An influx of 7 ♂ ♂ into the group over the course of 6 months coincided with estrus in all ♂♂ in the group, most of whom conceived during this time. ♂♂ mated with several ♂ ♂ during any one estrus period. ♂ ♂ engaged in frequent aggressive interactions with one another, from which ranks were determined; rank was correlated with 5 measures of sexual activity over periods of 1.5 months and less. However, a consistently low‐ranking ♂ was able to have high scores of mating success at the end of the breeding season because his tenure was longer than that of any higher ranking ♂. Thus both rank and tenure length can influence mating success independently.These results indicate that there is more to mating success than being a harem ♂. This view is supported by the fact that about a third of all observations of redtails document multi♂ ♂ groups. Which strategy a ♂ “chooses” seems to be related to his physical and social skills, vis a vis other ♂ ♂ and ♂♂ respectively; these, in turn, are likely to be influenced by his age and developmental history, and the surrounding social milieu.Clumping of estrus periods in a breeding season hinders a single ♂'s reproductive monopolization of the group. However, it is not clear whether synchrony of estrus has been selected to promote a multi‐♂ ♂ situation, which could benefit ♂♂ in several ways, or whether it is a consequence of selection for synchrony of births, or whether it is not a result of selection.Differences in social structure between populations do not vary in predicted ways with ecologically determined population parameters. Abstract and SummaryFemale nestlings of the zebra finch were treated with physiological doses of estradiol at varying ages and for different durations. Most of the females produced song after adult testosterone‐treatment: Estradiol‐treatment from day 2 posthatch until day 18 produced a male‐like song quality in females. Treatment from day 2 or 4 until day 11 produced poor song in females, comparable to the early juvenile song of males. Treatment started after day 4 and continuing for no more than 6 days produced no singing in females. Thus, both timing and duration of estradiol‐treatment influence song capacity.Females, shamtreated as nestlings, do not display vocalizations which resemble male song. In a few control females however, after adult testosterone‐treatment a new type of vocalization was observed which by context is homologous to the courtship song of males, but the vocalizations do not show any acoustic parameters typical for the song of the males.ZusammenfassungWeibliche Nestlinge des Zebrafinken wurden mit physiologischen Dosen Östradiol behandelt, wobei Beginn und Dauer der Behandlung variiert wurden. Ein Teil der Versuchstiere sang nach Adult‐Testosteronbehandlung: Eine Östrogenbehandlung vom 2. bis zum 18. Lebenstag bewirkt eine Gesangsqualität, die in fast alien Parametern dem Gesang adulter männlicher Zebrafinken entspricht. Bei Behandlung vom 2. oder 4. Lebenstag bis zum 11. Lebenstag produzieren die Weibchen einen einfachen Gesang, der dem frühen Jugendgesang der Männchen vergleichbar ist. Setzt die Frühbehandlung erst nach dem 4. Lebenstag ein und dauert nicht länger als 6 Tage, läßt sich bei den adulten Tieren kein Gesang induzieren. Somit ist die Qualität des von den Weibchen produzierten Gesanges abhängig von Beginn und Dauer der Östrogen‐Früh‐behandlung.Weibchen, die als Nestling nur Placebo‐behandelt wurden, singen in der Regel nach Adult‐Testosteronbehandlung nicht.
