摘要:
AbstractThe approximate shear bond strength of subgingival calculus was measured on freshly extracted teeth. The experimental method was validated on polycarboxylate controls. The object was to specify a suitable upper limit for periodontal dressing adhesion, and a level of 4.0MN/m2is suggested by these results

摘要:
AbstractThe effect on tooth mobility of periodontal treatment utilizing a gingivectomy procedure was studied during a period of 26 weeks in 25 maxillary anterior teeth of six subjects with moderate to advanced periodontal disease. The gingival conditions were evaluated by gingival fluid measurement and the loss of marginal bone as seen on radiographs. Tooth mobility was measured in a bucco‐lingual direction using forces between 20 p and 80 p.The results show a decrease of gingival fluid throughout the study. Tooth mobility was already reduced in the majority of teeth 2 weeks after surgery. An average reduction of tooth mobility amounting to 43.7 % (using the corrective formula of Mühlemann 1960) was observed after 4 weeks. No additional reduction took place during the remaining experimental peri

摘要:
AbstractA clinical study was conducted on four adults to compare the relative efficacy of 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate and 0.1 % stannous fluoride (SnF2). Using a crossover experimental design, subjects rinsed twice daily for 5 days with SnF2and then, after a 2‐day interim recovery period, for 5 days with chlorhexidine. Statistically significant differences (P<0.05) in the relative efficacy of the two agents were found. Chlorhexidine was more effective in reducing Gingival and Plaque Indices, plaque wet weight and bacterial Colony Forming Units, calculated both per subject and per grou

摘要:
AbstractThe temperature of 104 periodontal pockets of various depths was measured before institution of any preventive or curative therapy. A tendency to a rise in pocket temperature due to increased pocket depth was noted. However, statistically no linear correlation was observed between the temperature and the depth of the periodontal pockets. The possibility of using temperature measurements as a diagnostic and prognostic aid in periodontal disease has been discussed.

摘要:
AbstractAn experimental gingivitis study was designed to test the effect of a 5‐min twice daily oxygen application on the development of plaque and onset of gingivitis A method for the local application of medical grade oxygen to the upper anterior teeth was developed, with the lower anterior teeth used as controls. Fourteen periodontally healthy dental students of average age 21.9 years participated in the study. There was no significant effect of oxygen on plaque formation, crevicular fluid flow, or the number of gingival bleeding sites. Experimental and control gingival segments exhibited bleeding on probing at an average of 6.6 days after cessation of mechanical plaque control, much earlier than reported in other experimental gingivitis studie

摘要:
AbstractIn the present report, five selected periodontal patients were treated for 1 week with metronidazole. Two of the patients had their teeth scaled and root‐planed the week they received metronidazole. Prior to treatment,B. asaccharolyticusaccounted for 41 % of the cultivable isolates and the spirochetes averaged 29 % of the microscopic count in plaque removed from each of four pockets per patient. The presence of these elevated proportions of periodontopathic bacteria combined with the presence of periodontal pockets and attachment loss suggested that the patients were in a state of an active infectious process involving primarily anaerobic bacteria. If this be the case, then antimicrobial therapy directed against these anaerobes with metronidazole was indicated. The 1‐week treatment with metronidazole significantly reduced the proportions of these organisms for up to 6 months after treatment. Coincident with these findings was an improvement in the clinical parameters, especially in those sites that initially had greater than 5 mm pocket or attachment loss. These sites showed a 2 mm or more reduction in pocket depth and an almost 2 mm gain in apparent attachment that was evident 6 months after treatment. The results obtained were in only five patients. However, the magnitude of improvement suggests that antimicrobial therapy directed against anaerobic organisms may be a valuable adjunct to periodontal ther

摘要:
AbstractThe predominant cultivable dental plaque flora was studied in 10 adult female beagle dogs with advanced periodontitis. Supragingival and subgingival plaque from a maxillary third premolar (P3) was removed and cultured anaerobically on various growth media and all colonies were subcultured and partially characterized. Histopathological specimens of the plaque sampling sites showed significant loss of connective tissue attachment. Spirochetes were found in ail samples. Anaerobic gram‐negative organisms were predominant in both types of plaque accounting for about 55 % of the cultivable organisms in the supragingival plaque and almost 75% in the subgingival plaque.Bacteroides asaccharolyticuswas the most prominant organism in the supragingival plaque, whereasFusobacterium nucleatumpredominated in the subgingival flora. Streptococcal and actinomycotic species were common in the supragingival plaque, but their proportions, especially those of the actmomycetes, were decreased in the subgingival flora. In many respects the bacterial profile associated with disease resembled that reported in human periodontal diseas

摘要:
AbstractHealing events after nonsurgical periodontal therapy in patients with periodontal pockets 4–7 mm deep were investigated. Incisors, cuspids and premolars in 15 patients were treated by plaque control and supra‐ and subgingival debridement using hand or ultrasonic instruments in a split mouth approach. The results were evaluated by recordings of plaque scores, bleeding on probing, probing pocket depths and probing attachment levels. All these parameters were improved during the initial 4–5 months after start of therapy. Little change occurred during the rest of the 13‐month observation period. No difference of results could be observed comparing hand and ultrasonic instrumentation or comparing the results of two different operators. Initially a total of 106 sites demonstrated probing pocket depths ≥ 6 mm. At 13 months only 13 such sites were observed. The apparently successful results of conservative treatment of patients with 4–7 mm deep pockets in the present study raise the question to what extent nonsurgical therapy is feasible also in patients with severely advan
