摘要:
Easily accessible tests for homogeneity of variance are compared to ANOVA procedures for the problem of deciding whether significant differences exist among independent samples. Frequently an analysis of variance is performed to detect such differences assuming the data are similar in shape and variability. This paper argues that analysis of variance performed on the data transformed to the squares of the corresponding ranks is preferable for detecting general differences in distributions. In business and economic decision‐making, the assumptions of similar shape and variability are rarely justified, but ironically the question of interest is usually that of general differences.

摘要:
This paper presents a structured approach to the teaching of phasors to undergraduates in engineering and mathematics. Emphasis is placed on the phasor as a linear transformation. An elementary treatment of the use of the phasor transformation method for calculating steady‐state solutions of differential equations is presented.

When a bounded linear functional defined onC[‐h, h]is applied to an analytic function a power series inhis often obtained. It is shown here that if the linear functional possesses an error term of a certain general type, then the coefficients of this power series must possess a particular property involving complete monotonicity. The result provides a new source of examples of completely monotonic sequences.

We analyse the casino game of Keno using elementary probability, expected value decision criteria and preference theory. It is demonstrated how preference theory enables one to determine optimal betting strategies for various risk attitudes which may be counterintuitive to the average individual. Factors are considered which standard expected value analysis ignores.

摘要:
An attempt has been made to describe the meaning and the process of the microteaching approach, which facilitates the inculcation of important teaching skills for both pre‐service and in‐service teachers. Based on a systems approach, a model of the training of both experienced and inexperienced teachers has been developed, using the essential components of microteaching. Finally, the essential factors of the competency based teacher education (CBTE) programme and the microteaching approach have been compared for the better understanding of the applications of the latter.

摘要:
This paper presents a motivational example of meaningful use of simple tools from elementary probability. The model presented represents an optimal design for a receiver of signals under the assumption two messages are sent. The results characterize optimal receivers and present useful optimizing functions. In turn, these functions are used to explain and prove a version of the Neyman‐Pearson theorem. Finally, informative examples are given.

The search for non‐specific indicators of stress in organisms has pointed toward the adenylate energy charge, a measure of cellular energy metabolism. Computations of the adenylate energy charge and its components have created the need for an easy‐to‐use computer program to perform the calculations. This paper presents a program to do these calculations that can be used by unsupervised students.

This paper describes a new method based on the generalized inverse of matrices for obtaining the solution of dimensional analysis problems in modelling. The application of this method is illustrated through examples—in particular, to explosion cratering experiments and other related problems so as to obtain the scale‐invariants and the scaling relationships from model to large‐scale experiments.

摘要:
In most applications of ordinary ridge regression the usual practice is to estimate the constant term in the model by least squares. This contrasts with the theoretical development of ridge regression in which all regression coefficients are treated in the same way. A variety of results are given which support the use of the response sample mean to estimate the constant term when the predictor data matrix is in correlation form. This conclusion also applies to generalized ridge regression.
