摘要:
PURPOSETo explore the value of professional storytelling in relation to family storytelling and continuity of care.SAMPLEA purposeful sample of 17 healthcare professionals caring for ill children in a home hospice environment.METHODSAs a part of a larger qualitative research study examining parent care actions for children in home hospice care, data from a subsample of healthcare professionals was obtained through participation in team meetings and through recruitment of families.MAIN RESEARCH VARIABLESPatients' and families' stories as related by healthcare professionals.FINDINGSThree major themes emerged: we give complex care, care is ever changing, and professionals need to communicate.CONCLUSIONSWith each retelling relationships are explored, meaning may be given to events, and emotional relief may be experienced.IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICEStorytelling is a way for professionals to examine their values and attitudes and a way for the healthcare professionals to provide and coordinate care.
