The intracranial volume of 104 children with Cranio synostosis was measured. Premature fusion of skull sutures is thought to deny the growing brain room to expand, but contrary to traditional teaching the intracranial volume of such children is often within normal limits.

摘要:
The protected childhood environment and the anatomy of the Craniofacial skeleton largely protect children from experiencing facial fractures. However, when major trauma to the head and face is sustained, an oblique pattern of fractures has been observed, distinct from those common in adults and explicable in terms of the anatomic differences between the child's and the adult's head and face. This difference in pattern of facial fracturing is relevant in terms of the examination, investigation and treatment of the primary injury, and prevention of any subsequent facial growth disturbances.

摘要:
Thirteen cases of trigonocephaly, seven isolated and six syndromic cases, were evaluated by preoperative neurologic and genetic evaluation and by radiographic evaluation (CT scans). All 13 were treated in an identical surgical manner. Specimens from the coronal sutures were obtained during surgery for histologic evaluation. All of the isolated cases, except one, showed normal coronal sutures and had a good-to-excellent result from surgery. All of the syndromic or secondary cases showed an abnormality of the coronal sutures. Four of the six cases had bad results; two required subsequent surgical procedures. It is our opinion that if a coronal suture abnormality is noted on preoperative CT scans or if preoperative evaluation demonstrates an associated syndrome or CNS malformation, the results from surgery must be guarded.

摘要:
Reconstructing the proper balance and harmony of the face begins with the manipulation and positioning of the bandeau. The bandeau or brow is the key architectural component of craniofacial reconstruction. Advancement of the supraorbital bar and forehead can result in functional improvements. This article details the historical development of the surgical procedures available for use in recontouring the forehead. Specific surgical procedures are described and evaluated including the method of removing an unsuitable, unusable bandeau, fashioning a new one from a strip of parietal cranial bone, and repositioning it. The advantages of the bilateral lamellar split bandeau are discussed.

Fibrin glue has been utilized for the past 15 years in Europe in plastic surgery, especially at the beginning for nerve and skin grafts. For 4 years, we have utilized it in craniofacial surgery in over 72 cases. No adverse reaction has been observed, and the various applications are discussed.

The successful use of the newly developed Micro System for internal fixation is discussed. The Micro System provides a firm three-dimensional fixation of segments. Since it cannot withstand extreme muscle or masticatory forces, it should be used selectively. Its usefulness in the fields of craniofacial surgery, neuro-surgery, and hand surgery is viewed optimistically.

摘要:
The advantages of the subcranial over the transcranial approach for fronto-orbital tumor resection and sub-cranial exposure of the skull base are described in this paper. The primary reconstruction and fixation of the bone grafts with miniplates or wire ligatures are illustrated. The utilization of lyophilized cartilage for the reconstruction of the orbital roof, as well as the bridging of the defects with Biocement, are pointed out. The reconstruction of the articulate fossa of the temporomandibular joint in extensive resections of tumors in the temporal area is emphasized.

摘要:
Accuracy and reproducibility are the hallmarks of the scientific method. Too frequently, the scientific method is abandoned and short circuited. The development and eventual clinical application of dental and medical materials and devices requires strict adherence to scientific methodology. The development of new bone repair materials is no exception. A reliable, convenient, and scientifically sound evaluation system is available for testing new bone repair materials. Animal models that fulfill stringent testing criteria and analytical methodology for assessment are described in this review. Experimental design, surgical protocols, tissue preparation for quantitative histology and x-rays, and biochemical assessments are reviewed.

摘要:
Visualization during exploration of the orbit is hampered by herniation of orbital fat around the malleable retractor in posterior orbital dissection. A thin stiff disc of plastic sheeting, placed between the dissected orbital soft tissue contents and the malleable retractor, reduces prolapse of fat around the edges of the orbital retractor. The technique is utilized in acute fracture treatment and in late orbital reconstruction. The malleable retractor, placed below the plastic disc, may be easily taken in and out of the orbit with reduced damage of fat and enhanced visualization. Retractor damage to fat is reduced and visualization enhanced. The plastic sheet may be inserted over an intact posterior bony “ledge” in floor fractures, allowing accurate placement of bone grafts under direct visualization.Additionally, the use of a segment of flexible rubber sheeting sewed over a subciliary incision margin reduces traction injury, drill and cautery damage to eyelid skin.
