AbstractThe behavior of rigid circular cylinders suspended vertically in viscous fluids in laminar shear flow was found to compare favorably with a theory for infinitely long cylinders which we have extended to include interactions between two cylinders of different diameters. A description of the versatile Couette apparatus in which most of the experiments were performed is included. Observations were made on single cylinders at various distances from the wall bounding flow, on collisions between cylinders of both equal and unequal diameters and on interactions between a cylinder and a sphere. Collision doublets were found to be either permanent or separating, depending on the initial orientations and separations of the particles. The behavior of these particles is analogous to that of spheres in Couette flow.

AbstractThe electrification of fluids of low conductivity resulting from constricted flow has been studied. Currents and voltages have been measured using insulated test sections. For discussion purposes, the electrification process has been subdivided into two regions; an electrostatic region (high static voltages and low currents) and a streaming region (low voltages and high streaming currents produced by flow constriction).Symmetrical negative and positive streaming current curves were obtained from the insulated metal tubes located upstream and downstream from the constriction. The magnitude of the streaming current was dependent on the constriction flow area, the polar solute, the conductivity of the solution, and the flow rate. Low voltages were measured in the streaming region because of the high conductivity of the fluid. Currents have been related to the measured voltage and the conductivity of the solution.

AbstractHeats of mixing of n‐pentane, n‐decane and n‐tridecane with benzene were experimentally determined at 25d̀C. Values of the parameters associated with the quasi‐lattice theory were evaluated using the experimental results together with the literature heats of mixing values for the systems benzene‐n‐hexane, benzene‐n‐heptane, benzene‐n‐octane, benzene‐n‐nonane and benzene‐n‐hexadecane. Using the literature model for benzene, the values of the parameters for the n‐alkanes that resulted in the “best fit” of the experimental data differ from those reported in the literature. AbstractThe surface tensions of both simple and complex liquid mixtures are considered. It is shown that the surface tensions of mixtures of simple liquids can be predicted well from a model utilizing the concept of a regular surface solution. For complex mixtures, the use of a parameter reflecting the difference in characteristic energy between the bulk liquid and the surface leads to a good fit of the data for a number of systems.

AbstractCHARLES W. SOLBRIGThe problem of convective diffusion with a first order reaction on one wall of a catalytic reactor is solved to implement the determination of rate constants from overall conversion measurements. The analysis applies to an isothermal gas mixture with constant physical properties and a parabolic velocity profile. A complete separation of variables, an entrance region, and a fully developed solution as well as asymptotic expressions for large eigenvalues are presented.A formula is given which expresses the Nusselt number as a function of the rate constants. These quantities combine as additive resistances to form an effective rate constant. By analogy, one could apply these results to a plate heat exchanger with a finite wall resistance.

AbstractTheoretical expressions were developed for the design of a tubular reactor for the calcination of limestone, pneumatically conveyed by flue gas. The total residence time and the length of the reactor are affected in particular by the particle size, the excess thermal capacity of the gas and the heat transfer coefficient. High throughput can be achieved in relatively small reactors.An experimental investigation verified a theoretical prediction, that a considerable part of the decomposition takes place in the first few centimeters of the reactor length. The rate of heat transfer in this section was high, with Nusselt numbers of 9.9 to 31.7.

AbstractGaseous eddy diffusivity measurements were made by a point injection technique in a 6.5‐in. column packed with open‐end screen cylinders varying in size from 3/8‐in. to 1 1/2‐in. diameter, and made from wire cloth varying from 4 to 28 mesh/in. Oxygen was used as the tracer gas. Only packings made from 4 to 10 mesh/in. produced concentration profiles which were symmetric. The latter data show that turbulent diffusivity increases linearly with gas flow rate, but decreases with decreasing mesh opening and wire diameter.
