AbstractAn analysis was made of the rate of heat transfer by convection, radiation, and chemical reaction to a dispersion of particles in a non‐absorbing gas. The gas‐solids suspension was subjected to co‐gravitational flow at low Reynolds Numbers (50–500) through a cylindrical reactor, the wall of which was maintained at a uniform temperature (400–900°C). The rate of heat transfer by convection from the wall to the gas was determined experimentally. The differential equations were solved on an IBM‐650 digital computer, for the reduction of iron oxide particles (40 to 100 microns) by hydrogen. The program output recorded the particle residence time and corresponding values of gas and particle temperatures, length of reactor travelled, percent reduction, and individual rates of heat transfer to the particle by convection, radiation and chemical reaction. AbstractNew data were obtained for absorption of carbon dioxide from an air‐carbon dioxide mixture by aqueous ammonia solutions in a tower packed with 1/2 in. Raschig rings. The rates of absorption of carbon dioxide, expressed as over‐all volumetric coefficientsKGa, were correlated with the ammonia concentration and the liquid flow rate.The data were analyzed in the light of the film, penetration and Kishinevsky theories for absorption with simultaneous chemical reaction. Effective interfacial areas, calculated from the data with the aid of the first two theories, were reasonable, and three to four times larger than the corresponding areas for pure physical absorption or vaporization under the same hydrodynamic conditions. AbstractLiquid‐vapor equilibrium data at 750 mm. Hg are given for the four binary systemsCH3OH+CH2Cl2,n‐C5H12+CH2Cl2,n‐C5H12+CH3OHandn‐C5H12+n‐C6H14. The second and third of these systems have been shown previously to exhibit the phenomenon of non‐filmwise condensation, and the equilibrium data are used in the following paper to calculate (condensing) film coefficients for the liquid and vapor films. The first three systems are azeotropic, and the compositions and boiling points (at 750 mm. Hg) of the minimum‐boiling azeotropes are given.Densities have also been measured for the systemn‐C5H12+CH3OHat 25°C. and refractive indices at 25°C. for the other three systems. AbstractViscosity data for slurries of five solid particle systems suspended in a mineral oil are presented for solid concentrations up to 50% by volume. At volume concentrations of less than 30% the results are well represented by the Einstein equation in its fluidity form, the constant varying with the system between 2.65 and 3.15, (as compared with 2.5 in the theoretical equation). At higher concentrations the slurries are non‐Newtonian, and no satisfactory correlation is available in this region, very little complete data for the high concentration region have been published.Slurry viscosities are greater for smaller particles, and are greater for irregular particles than for spherical particles. Slurry viscosities in regions of high concentration can be considerably reduced by careful selection of particle size distribution.Pressure gradients measured in an experimental pipeline carrying a suspension of coal in oil in laminar flow could not have been predicted using the viscosities determined in the laborator

AbstractThe rate of sedimentation of precipitated calcium carbonate in water was measured as a function of the solid concentration and the shape and angle of inclination of the container. It was found that an experimentally determined coefficient had to be included in the settling equation proposed by Nakamura to make it fit the data.
