AbstractThe amount of flowing air held up, or retained, under the surface of water and corn syrup solutions was measured in cylindrical tanks of different sizes using turbine type mixing impellers. Holdup is frequently used as an index of the effectiveness of gas‐liquid contacting in adsorption or stripping operations; it can be correlated with air flow rate and power input as followsh = a(PT/V)bFcwherehis the holdup of air in ft. per ft. of ungassed liquid,a, b, andc, are constants, (PT/V) is the total power supplied by the impeller and air per unit volume, andFis the superficial velocity of the air. AbstractThe method of least‐squares fitting of harmonic functions to known boundary conditions has been employed to obtain closed‐form solutions for laminar flow of an incompressible fluid through the constant area annulus between a regular polygonal duct and a centered circular core. The product of Fanning friction factor and Reynolds number has been determined for the entire range between the extreme case of no core and the other extreme case where the core touches the outerwalls. For the latter case, it is shown that when the number of sides of the polygon approaches infinity, f.Re approaches a minimum value of 6.22. AbstractThe longitudinal mixing of liquids flowing through straight pipes may be characterized by the coefficient of longitudinal dispersionK. In the case of pipings equipped with bends, the value ofKmust be extended by ΔKexpressing the more intense longitudinal mixing in bend areas. Physically, the value of ΔKis determined by the secondary flow in pipe bends.The dependence of ΔKupon the Reynolds numberNR= 15 180‐73 180/, the bend length /α = 30°.90°/ and the proportional bend curvature /R/D= 2‐6/ has been measured on a 50,8 mm ‐ diameter pipe. These dependences are expressed by empirical equations. Each of these partial results is further discussed from the view of relationships valid for secondary flows. The individual values of dependence are summarized in a final equation expressing the simultaneous effect of each observed variable upon the value of ΔK, i. e.\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \Delta K = f/N_{Rc} ,\,R/D,\,\alpha /\,. $$\

AbstractA numerical method for calculating excess free energies and activity coefficients for binary systems, from total pressure measurements, is developed, which is well adapted to digital computation. The proposed method is shown to be superior to most methods now available in the literature.

AbstractGamma radiation has been used to initiate the gas phase reaction between chlorine and methane. The products consist of hydrogen chloride, and the four chlorinated methanes, in yields depending on the experimental conditions. Experiments were conducted over a range of temperatures, pressures, concentrations and absorbed doses.Gvalues as high as 1.2 × 106were found, indicating the formation of a chain reacting system. Two hypothetical reactor models were used to obtain an estimate of the energy cost of the process. AbstractA theoretical treatment of the decay of activity in aging catalysts is presented. In this treatment it is assumed that catalyst activity is a function of time‐on‐stream only and on the basis of this assumption the behavior of static bed catalytic reactors is studied. AbstractThe organic phase produced by extraction of a uranium leach liquor with Amberlite LA‐2 in kerosene was stripped of uranium in laboratory tests with solutions of NaCl and H2SO4or solutions of Na2SO4. It was found that NaCI‐H2SO4stripping reduced considerably the effectiveness of the solvent for subsequent extraction, whereas Na2SO4stripped the uranium content without any deleterious effect. AbstractThe “hardness” components in sea water can be considerably reduced by means of a new economical fixed bed technique called “Reciprocating Flow Ion Exchange”, when used in conjunction with a closed cycle exchanger‐evaporator system.Removal of 87.9% of the calcium and 54.5% of the magnesium in sea water has been obtained with an overall flow rate of 5.0 U. S. g. p. m./sq. ft. Results from bench scale and a 5,000 g. p. d. pilot plant were identical.
