摘要:
AbstractThe problem of assessing the merit of a technique for displaying data is addressed. The divergence, a measure of the difference between two graphs, is introduced and its properties discussed. The performance of the divergence is investigated by Monte Carlo methods. Two applications of the divergence are presented.

摘要:
AbstractWe propose two density estimators of the survival distribution in the setting of the Koziol‐Green random‐censoring model. The estimators are obtained by maximum‐penalized‐likelihood methods, and we provide an algorithm for their numerical evaluation. We establish the strong consistency of the estimators in the Hellinger metric, theLp‐norms,p= 1,2, ∞, and a Sobolev norm, under mild conditions on the underlying survival density and the censoring d

摘要:
AbstractEstimation of the mean of a multivariate normal distribution is considered. The components of the mean vector θ are assumed to be exchangeable; this is modelled in a hierarchical fashion with independent Cauchy distributions as the first‐stage prior. The resulting generalized Bayes estimator is calculated and shown to be robust with respect to the presence of outlying means. Alternative estimators that have similar behaviour but are cheaper to compute are also deriv

摘要:
AbstractPrior information is modeled either by (1) a class of unimodal distributions with specified quantiles, or by (2) an ∈‐contamination class with contaminations subject to unimodal and quantile restrictions. We show how the ranges of certain posterior summaries can be found. Using numerical examples, we compare the robustness behaviour under these classes, and assess the effect, in terms of robustness, of specifying a base pr

摘要:
AbstractWe extend recent work on Laplace approximations (Tierney and Kadane 1986; Tierney, Kass, and Kadane 1989) from parameter spaces that are subspaces of Rkto those that are on circles, spheres, and cylinders. While such distributions can be mapped onto the real line (for example, a distribution on the circle can be thought of as a function of an angle θ, 0 ⩽ 0 ⩾ 2π), that the end points coincide is not a feature of the real line, and requires special treatment. Laplace approximations on the real line make essential use of the normal integral in both the numerator and the denominator. Here that role is played by the von Mises integral on the circle, by the Bingham integrals on the spheres and hyperspheres, and by the normal‐von Mises and normal‐Bingham integrals on the cylinders and hypercylinders, respectively. We begin with a brief introduction to Laplace approximations and to previous Bayesian work on circles, spheres, and cylinders. We then develop the theory for parameter spaces that are hypercylinders, since all other shapes considered here are special cases. We compute some examples, which show reasonable accuracy even for smal

摘要:
AbstractThe problems of estimation and hypotheses testing on the parameters of two correlated linear models are discussed. Such models are known to have direct applications in epidemiologic research, particularly in the field of family studies. When the data are unbalanced, the maximum‐likelihood estimation of the parameters is achieved by adopting a fairly simple numerical algorithm. The asymptotic variances and covariances of the estimators are derived, and the procedures are illustrated on arterial‐blood‐pressure data from the liter

摘要:
AbstractA new proof is given for the asymptotic normality of sum functions of spacings, providing an alternative to the method of Le Cam (1958). The result is obtained under an optimal moment condition. The proof is based on a simple decomposition into a leading term, which is asymptotically normal, and a remainder term, which is shown to be negligible.

摘要:
AbstractLet X = (Xj: j = 1,…, n) be n row vectors of dimensionpindependently and identically distributed multinomial. For each j, Xjis partitioned as Xj= (Xj1, Xj2, Xj3), wherepiis the dimension of Xjiwithp1= 1,p1+p2+p3=p. In addition, consider vectors Yji,i= 1,2j = 1,…,nithat are independent and distributed as X1i. We treat here the problem of testing independence between X11and X13knowing that X11and X12are uncorrected. A locally best invariant test is proposed for this prob

摘要:
AbstractAcceptance sampling techniques are used to monitor the accuracy of gas meters. Random samples of meters are taken from homogeneous lots, and two accuracy measurements are recorded for each meter. In the past, the two measurements were averaged, and an acceptance sampling test applied to the sample of averages. In 1987, the plan was modified so that virtually the same test is applied to the two measurements individually. This new procedure is more stringent than the old procedure. In a study of data sampled over three years, the new plan rejects more lots than does the old plan, leading to greatly increased costs to the gas industry and therefore to the consumer. Theoretical reasons are given for why this occurs, and an alternative plan is proposed.
