AbstractAutomatic writing has been of interest to psychologists, clinicians and theoreticians of the mind both as a phenomenon in its own right and as a technique for exploring aspects of dissociation and normal and pathological consciousness. This paper follows the course of experimental investigations of automatic writing in psychology; beginning with the early work of Frederic Myers and Edmund Gurney and continuing with that of Alfred Binet, Pierre Janet, William James and Morton Prince, it centers on the 1896 experiments of Leon Solomons and Gertrude Stein, but also examines later laboratory studies. The conceptual and methodological challenges posed by automatic writing persist in such contemporary concerns as divided attention, implicit memory, and dissociations of awareness and intentionality.

AbstractLate nineteenth‐century influences on American population thought are highlighted by focusing on Francis Amasa Walker's theory of native American fertility decline. Malthusianism, Darwinism, and racism combined to produce a new biological Malthu‐sianism that identified a population calamity more harmful than overpopulation‐biological deterioration. The plausibility of Walker's theory is examined with respect to contemporary demographic theory and demographic fact. Its reception by American social scientists is described: acceptance of biological Malthusianism was widespread, and scrutiny of an ideologically useful but empirically untenable theory proved difficult when the social scientific community shared a particular value pos

AbstractCarl Jung is often cited as the first to use the word association method for the diagnosis of complexes. But was he really the first to do so? The treatment of this issue is examined in several history of psychology and personality texts and other sources. It turns out that Max Wertheimer also performed early studies of the word association method as a technique for the detection of criminal guilt. Published and archival resources make it possible to resolve the occasionally acrimonious controversy between Carl Jung and Wertheimer concerning priority in this use of the method.
